This calendar puts 2027 on one page: where to go in each month, the dated events worth building a trip around, and the public holidays and bridge days in five countries. The destination picks and weather figures come from our month-by-month guides, whose January to September editions are already written for 2027. Every 2027 event and holiday date was checked again on 5 October 2026, on the organiser's, government's or scientific agency's own page wherever one exists.

Where a 2027 date had not been announced by 5 October 2026, we say so instead of guessing. Temperatures are long-term monthly averages, not forecasts. The Spanish and Brazilian holiday tables are marked as derived, because their official 2027 lists were not out yet. For the rest of this year, see the 2026 travel calendar.

The big dates of 2027

Each of these was checked at its source; Lunar New Year, Carnival and Oktoberfest are in the month sections.

The total solar eclipse, Monday 2 August

The Moon's shadow crosses the Strait of Gibraltar in mid-morning and runs along North Africa to the Red Sea. EclipseWise, Fred Espenak's eclipse catalogue, lists the path of totality over Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia, and NASA's path table also puts the central line over Tunisia. On that line totality lasts 4 min 48 s to 4 min 54 s where it passes the Strait (at about 35.7°N, between 08:46 and 08:48 UT), 5 min 42 s in central Tunisia, 6 min 10 s in Libya and 6 min 23 s in Upper Egypt, where the line passes just north of Luxor. Greatest eclipse is at 10:06 UT, in Egypt.

In Spain, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) puts Ceuta, Melilla, almost all of Cádiz province, part of Málaga's and the southern edges of Granada and Almería inside the band, at about 10:45–10:50 Spanish time. Ceuta gets 4 min 48 s and Melilla 4 min 34 s; Cádiz city has 2 min 54 s and Málaga 1 min 48 s.

Use solar viewers that meet ISO 12312-2 for the partial phases. NASA says the naked eye is safe only during totality, and warns never to look through a camera, binoculars or a telescope while wearing eclipse glasses. Expect peak-holiday demand for beds and midsummer heat (Egypt's afternoons run well above 40°C, or 104°F), and check your government's travel advice before considering Libya or Yemen.

Santiago de Compostela's Holy Year, all of 2027

Santiago holds a Holy Year whenever 25 July, the feast of St James, falls on a Sunday, as it does in 2027. The last one was 2021–22 and the next is 2032. The archdiocese presented the jubilee motto on 24 September 2026. No official date for opening the Holy Door had been published when we checked; the archdiocese said only that the liturgical jubilee hymn would premiere in December, possibly at the Holy Door's opening. Book Camino and city beds early, above all around Sunday 25 July.

FIFA Women's World Cup, 24 June to 25 July, Brazil

Thirty-two teams play 64 matches in Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo. Brazil open at the Maracanã on Thursday 24 June, and the final is there on Sunday 25 July. FIFA is taking registrations of interest at FIFA.com/tickets.

Rugby World Cup, 1 October to 13 November, Australia

Twenty-four teams play 52 matches in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney and Townsville, opening with Australia against Hong Kong China in Perth on Friday 1 October and ending with the final in Sydney on Saturday 13 November, in the Australian spring.

ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, 2 October to 21 November, southern Africa

Fourteen teams play 57 matches at 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe (including Victoria Falls) and Namibia (Windhoek). The tournament opens on 2 October with a three-team Super Series in Namibia; the group stage starts in Cape Town on 7 October with Australia against India, and the final is in Johannesburg on 21 November. The ICC's ticket ballot is open until 23:59 South African time on 21 November 2026, with prices quoted at roughly US$9.50–30 (€8.50–27).

European Capitals of Culture: Liepāja and Évora

Liepāja, on Latvia's Baltic coast, opens its year over 22–24 January, with an amber hunt on the beach and concerts at the Great Amber concert hall on Saturday 23 January. Évora, in Portugal's Alentejo, opens its year on Saturday 6 February with a free show by the director Marco Martins and some 400 performers in the Rossio de São Brás, RTP reported; in 2025 RTP reported that the full programme would be announced in the last quarter of 2026.

GREEN×EXPO 2027, Yokohama, 19 March to 26 September

Japan's international horticultural expo runs at Kamiseya in Yokohama, with around ten million flowers and plants and some 600 cherry trees of about 40 varieties due to be in bloom at the opening. Tickets and visit-date reservations go through the official booking site.

Ryder Cup, Adare Manor, 17 to 19 September

The Ryder Cup celebrates its 100th anniversary at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, with build-up days from Monday 13 September and competition between Europe and the United States from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September.

Glastonbury and the Tour de France

Glastonbury returns on 23–27 June after its 2026 fallow year. The general sale on Sunday 4 October 2026 was for pre-registered buyers only, at £408 (about €480) including the booking fee, and the festival now lists tickets as sold out, with a resale of returns in spring 2027. The Tour de France starts in Edinburgh on Friday 2 July, and its first three stages cross Scotland, England and Wales, ending in Cardiff on Sunday 4 July.

World Youth Day, Seoul, 3 to 8 August

Days in the Dioceses run around South Korea from 29 July to 2 August, then the main events, including the vigil and closing Mass, fill Seoul from 3 to 8 August. Expect pressure on Seoul hotels and KTX trains.

Beethoven 200, Vienna, 26 March

Good Friday 2027 is also the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death. Vienna's Musikverein marks the day with the Missa solemnis (the Wiener Philharmoniker and Wiener Singverein under Franz Welser-Möst), in a season that also includes Igor Levit playing all the piano sonatas.

January 2027 — Summer in the south, sales in the north

Holiday prices fall away after Epiphany, making the following weeks among the year's cheapest in the Northern Hemisphere, while the far south is in high summer.

Thailand's Andaman coast. January is the driest, clearest month on Phuket, Krabi and the islands, with days around 32°C (90°F) and a flat, clear sea. The trade-off: it is peak season: ferries, dive boats and beachfront rooms book out, and the Similans have visitor caps.

Patagonia. Torres del Paine, El Chaltén and the Carretera Austral are fully open in their warmest month, with usable light past 22:00. The trade-off: it is also peak wind season, and Torres del Paine's refugios sell out months ahead.

The Canary Islands. Europe's only reliable winter sun, at 20–22°C (68–72°F), about four hours from most of northern Europe, with the lowest fares of the winter. The trade-off: the Atlantic is bracing, and the big southern resorts are busy with long-stay visitors all winter.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 January: Three Kings parades across Spain, then Epiphany, a public holiday in Spain, Italy, Austria, Poland and Greece.
  • Monday 18 January: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (US).
  • 18–19 January: Timkat in Ethiopia; Ohrid's Orthodox Epiphany cross dive on the 19th.
  • 22–24 January: Liepāja opens its Capital of Culture year.
  • Saturday 23 January: Venice Carnival begins (to 9 February).

Avoid in January: northern Vietnam (cold and grey), Sri Lanka's east coast and Thailand's Gulf islands (wrong monsoon), and Mediterranean beach resorts, mostly shut and cold.

The full month guide: where to go in January, plus Epiphany around the world for the parades and cross dives.

February 2027 — Carnival and Lunar New Year, three days apart

Lunar New Year (Saturday 6 February) and Carnival Tuesday (the 9th) share one week, and February is the last cheap month up north before spring pricing.

Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. Rio's Special Group samba schools parade at the Sambadrome on 7–9 February, with grandstand seats at R$250 (about €43) a night and the champions back on the 13th. Salvador's free street carnival runs 4–9 February, according to the mayor's plan reported by A Tarde. The trade-off: Carnival week is Brazil's hardest booking, with multi-night minimum stays; from the 16th Rio is far cheaper.

The Serengeti and Ndutu. The wildebeest herds calve on the southern short-grass plains: several hundred thousand births in a few weeks, with predators close behind. The trade-off: it is the wet season, with short, heavy afternoon rain and rough tracks.

Andalusia. Seville, Córdoba and Granada run 17–19°C (63–66°F) in the afternoon, almond blossom covers the hills, and the Alhambra is far easier to book than in spring. The trade-off: it is cold in the shade and after dark, and some coastal and rural places close for winter.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Thursday 4 and Monday 8 February: Cologne's Weiberfastnacht and Rosenmontag.
  • Saturday 6 February: Lunar New Year, and Évora's Capital of Culture opening show; Seollal in Korea on Sunday 7 February; Taiwan and Vietnam are off from 4 to 10 February.
  • Tuesday 9 February: Carnival Tuesday and Mardi Gras, the last day of Venice Carnival; Ash Wednesday on the 10th.
  • Monday 15 February: Washington's Birthday (US). 15–17 February: Basel Fasnacht.
  • Saturday 20 February: Lantern Festival.

Avoid in February: Brazil in Carnival week unless Carnival is the reason; Vietnam and Taiwan in the three or four days around New Year, when many businesses close; and northern Laos and Thailand late in the month, when burning-season haze starts.

The full month guide: where to go in February, with where to celebrate Lunar New Year and Carnival 2027 around the world.

March 2027 — Blossom, Holi and an early Easter

Easter Sunday is 28 March, so Holy Week and Holi share the last week, and the first three weeks are quiet shoulder season.

Japan. On the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals, Tokyo's cherry blossom is in full bloom on 31 March and Kyoto's on 4 April, and Yokohama's GREEN×EXPO opens on 19 March with around 600 cherry trees. The trade-off: bloom week is among Japan's priciest, and a warm February can pull the dates a week earlier.

Rajasthan. Holi falls on 22 March (the colour play can shift a day by region), and March is the last comfortable month: 28–32°C (82–90°F) now, 40°C (104°F) and more by May. The trade-off: Holi can overwhelm in the big tourist cities, especially for solo travellers and women; hotel celebrations and smaller towns are calmer.

Jordan. Petra's basin sits at 20–24°C (68–75°F), wildflowers cover the Dana reserve, and the Jordan Trail's most popular sections are in season. The trade-off: sudden March rain can flood the siqs and canyons; check conditions before any wadi hike.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Tuesday 9 March: Eid al-Fitr expected, ending Ramadan (the date can vary by a day between countries).
  • Wednesday 17 March: St Patrick's Day, a bank holiday in Northern Ireland.
  • Thursday 18 March: Keukenhof opens. Friday 19 March: GREEN×EXPO opens.
  • 21–27 March: Holy Week. Monday 22 March: Holi.
  • Friday 26 March: Good Friday and the Beethoven anniversary at the Musikverein. Sunday 28 March: Easter.

Avoid in March: Spain in Holy Week if the processions are not your reason, northern Laos and Thailand in burning-season haze, and most Greek islands, still closed.

The full month guide: where to go in March, and our cherry blossom season guide for reading the bloom forecasts.

April 2027 — Shoulder season with a crowded last week

With Easter in March, April opens in shoulder season; the pressure sits in mid-month and in a last week that stacks Greek Holy Week, King's Day and Golden Week.

The Netherlands. Keukenhof is open from 18 March to 9 May, the bulb fields usually peak from mid-April, and the Bloemencorso's flower floats roll from Noordwijk to Haarlem on Saturday 17 April, in highs around 13°C (55°F). The trade-off: King's Day on Tuesday 27 April fills Amsterdam, and Keukenhof's busiest days sell out.

Seville. The city has chosen Wednesday 14 April, the Wednesday of Feria, as a 2027 local holiday. With the Monday-to-Sunday format Seville restored in 2025, that puts the Feria de Abril on 13–18 April, opening with the alumbrado on the night of Monday 12 April, when the lights go on at midnight (check before booking), with afternoons around 23°C (73°F). The trade-off: most casetas are private, and Feria week prices run far above a normal April.

Thailand. Songkran turns the country into a water fight from Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April, from Chiang Mai's moat to Bangkok's Silom Road, while the Gulf islands are in their driest stretch. The trade-off: it is the hottest month, with Bangkok's highs near 35°C (95°F), and buses and trains fill as Thais head home.

Key 2027 dates:

  • 13–15 April: Songkran, with New Year festivals in neighbouring countries.
  • 13–18 April: Seville's Feria (expected), after the alumbrado on the night of Monday 12 April. Saturday 17 April: the Bloemencorso parade.
  • 22–25 April and 29 April–2 May: New Orleans Jazz Fest.
  • 26 April–1 May: Greek Holy Week. Tuesday 27 April: King's Day.
  • Thursday 29 April: Golden Week begins in Japan (to 5 May).

Avoid in April: Kenya and Tanzania in the long rains, north India's plains near 40°C (104°F) by the end of the month, and Japan from 29 April unless you booked long ago.

The full month guide: where to go in April

May 2027 — Value in the gaps between long weekends

May is the last shoulder month before summer pricing; travel in the gaps, roughly 10–14 and 20–26 May, between the long weekends.

Greece. Orthodox Easter is 2 May; from Easter Monday the island hotels and tavernas reopen, ferry timetables fill out, and the islands sit at 22–26°C (72–79°F). The trade-off: the sea is only 19–20°C (66–68°F), and Easter weekend books out as Greeks head home.

Japan after Golden Week. Golden Week ends on Wednesday 5 May, leaving fresh green maples and 20–25°C (68–77°F) days, and Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri leaves the Imperial Palace at 10:30 on Saturday 15 May. The trade-off: humidity builds late in the month, and the rainy season usually starts in early June.

Peru. The Andes turn dry, Cusco reaches about 20°C (68°F) by day before the June–August high season, and Corpus Christi parades the city's saints on Thursday 27 May. The trade-off: at about 3,400 m nights drop close to freezing, and Inca Trail permits sell out months ahead.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Sunday 2 May: Orthodox Easter. Monday 3 May: UK early May bank holiday.
  • Wednesday 12 May: Prague Spring opens. Thursday 13 May: Buddha's Birthday in Korea.
  • 15–19 May: Kurban Bayramı in Turkey, from its eve on the 15th. Monday 17 May: Whit Monday and Norway's Constitution Day.
  • 18–22 May: RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
  • Monday 31 May: Memorial Day (US) and the UK spring bank holiday.

Avoid in May: India's northern plains, routinely 40°C (104°F) and more; Kenya and Tanzania in the long rains; Patagonia as it closes for winter; and Japan in Golden Week.

The full month guide: where to go in May

June 2027 — Long days and a crowded last ten

Shoulder prices hold until mid-June; the last ten days are the crowded ones.

Stockholm and the archipelago. Midsummer Eve is Friday 25 June, late June brings more than 18 hours of daylight, and the archipelago's 30,000-plus islands are a ferry ride from the centre. The trade-off: Midsummer is a family holiday, so the city empties, many shops close and the state liquor shops shut.

Lisbon and Porto. Santo António's marchas parade down Avenida da Liberdade on the night of Saturday 12 June, and Porto's São João fills the night of 23 June with plastic hammers and midnight fireworks over the Ribeira. The trade-off: the festival nights stay loud until dawn, and the Atlantic stays around 17–18°C (63–64°F).

Cusco. In the heart of the dry season, Cusco stages Inti Raymi, the Inca festival of the sun, on Thursday 24 June, from the Qorikancha to Saqsaywaman. The trade-off: it is Cusco's most expensive week, Machu Picchu tickets sell out weeks ahead, and nights at 3,400 m drop to near freezing.

Key 2027 dates:

  • 15–19 June: Royal Ascot. Monday 21 June: the solstice and the Fête de la Musique.
  • 23–27 June: Glastonbury. Thursday 24 June: Inti Raymi and the Women's World Cup opener.
  • Friday 25 June: Midsummer Eve; the Montreal Jazz Festival opens (to 4 July).
  • Monday 28 June: Wimbledon begins.

Avoid in June: India's west coast and Thailand's Andaman coast as the monsoon arrives; Tokyo, Kyoto, Shanghai, Taipei and Hong Kong in their rainy seasons; and the Gulf and southern Egypt, past 40°C (104°F).

The full month guide: where to go in June

July 2027 — Peak season, packed with fixed dates

Southern Europe is at its hottest and priciest and much of Asia is under the monsoon, while south of the equator it is dry season.

The Masai Mara. The herds arrive from the Serengeti and the Mara River crossings begin, in Kenya's cool dry season. The trade-off: crossings cannot be booked, and the entry fee for non-resident adults doubles from US$100 to US$200 (about €89 to €178) a day from July.

Pamplona and the Basque coast. San Fermín runs from noon on 6 July to midnight on the 14th, with the encierro at 8:00 each morning from the 7th; San Sebastián, an hour north, is typically 22–25°C (72–77°F). The trade-off: Pamplona is loud, packed and expensive for nine days, and the bull run injures runners every year.

Kyoto. The Gion Matsuri fills July, with float processions on Saturdays 17 and 24 July after lantern-lit evenings in closed streets. The trade-off: Kyoto typically reaches 33°C (91°F) with heavy humidity, and hotels spike on both weekends.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Friday 2 July: Tour de France Grand Départ, Edinburgh.
  • Monday 5 July: Independence Day, observed (US).
  • 6–14 July: San Fermín. 9–18 July: Calgary Stampede. 11–13 July: Naadam.
  • Sunday 25 July: St James's Day in Santiago's Holy Year, and the Women's World Cup final at the Maracanã.
  • 28–29 July: Fiestas Patrias in Peru.

Avoid in July: Seville, Rome and Athens in a heatwave; India's west coast, Thailand's Andaman side and most of mainland Southeast Asia, mid-monsoon; and the Gulf and Egypt, where afternoons run well above 40°C (104°F).

The full month guide: where to go in July

August 2027 — The eclipse month

The year's biggest date is Monday 2 August; the rest of the month rewards places that are dry, cool or celebrating.

Cádiz province and the Strait. Spain's IGN puts almost all of Cádiz province, Ceuta and Melilla inside the band of totality at about 10:45–10:50 Spanish time: Ceuta gets 4 min 48 s, Cádiz city 2 min 54 s. The trade-off: beds go early in peak holiday season, and it pays to move towards the centre line: Málaga sees only 1 min 48 s.

Edinburgh. The Fringe runs 6–30 August in its 80th anniversary year, in 15–19°C (59–66°F) weather, with long evenings early in the month. The trade-off: accommodation prices roughly double for the Fringe; book by May, or stay in Leith.

Bali. South of the equator, Bali's July and August are its driest, least humid months, while mainland Asia is mid-monsoon. The trade-off: August is Bali's peak: book Uluwatu and Ubud two to three months out, and expect traffic in the south.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Monday 2 August: total solar eclipse, and Scotland's summer bank holiday.
  • 3–8 August: World Youth Day, Seoul.
  • 6–30 August: Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
  • 13–16 August: Obon, one of Japan's busiest travel weeks.
  • Sunday 15 August: Ferragosto. Monday 30 August: summer bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Avoid in August: Thailand's Andaman coast, most of Vietnam's coastline, India's west coast and Sri Lanka's south-west beaches, all at peak rain; and Italy around Ferragosto, when mountain huts book out months ahead.

The full month guide: where to go in August

September 2027 — Warm seas after the crowds leave

Schools go back, peak prices lapse and the Mediterranean is at its warmest, with the Ryder Cup and Oktoberfest late in the month.

The Cyclades. The Aegean peaks at 24–25°C (75–77°F) in September, the meltemi eases, and Naxos, Paros and Milos shed their August crowds. The trade-off: ferry schedules thin in the second half of the month, and some small island businesses start closing for winter.

Cape Town and the Western Cape. It is spring: 18–22°C (64–72°F) days, the summer south-easter not yet blowing, and southern right whales calving at Hermanus, the peak of shore-based whale watching. The trade-off: spring weather is changeable, and Table Mountain can vanish into cloud for days.

Munich. The 192nd Oktoberfest runs from Saturday 18 September to Sunday 3 October, as the Bavarian Alps turn crisp and clear. The trade-off: Munich hotel rates spike for the festival; book by spring, or stay in a nearby town and take the train in.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Monday 6 September: Labor Day (US). Tuesday 7 September: Independence Day, Brazil.
  • 13–19 September: Ryder Cup week at Adare Manor, with matches 17–19 September.
  • Saturday 18 September: Oktoberfest opens.
  • Sunday 26 September: GREEN×EXPO closes.

Avoid in September: the Caribbean, in Atlantic hurricane season, and Japan early in the month, when a passing typhoon can stop trains for a day.

The full month guide: where to go in September

October 2027 — Clear skies and two World Cups

Deserts cool, Himalayan skies clear and the foliage turns, and two World Cups begin in the southern spring.

Petra and Wadi Rum. Petra's canyons sit at a walkable 25–28°C (77–82°F), and Wadi Rum's nights are clear and cool. The trade-off: it is peak season, so book desert camps ahead and walk the Siq before 08:00.

Nepal. The monsoon has washed the haze from the air, giving the year's clearest views on the Annapurna Circuit, the Everest Base Camp trail and Poon Hill. The trade-off: trails and teahouses are busy, and Lukla flights back up when weather delays stack.

New England. The foliage peaks in northern Vermont in early October and in the Berkshires and coastal Maine by mid-to-late month, with 12–18°C (54–64°F) days. The trade-off: inns in the prime valleys book out and raise their rates, and the famous routes crawl at weekends.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Friday 1 October: the Rugby World Cup opens in Perth. Saturday 2 October: the Cricket World Cup begins.
  • Sunday 3 October: Oktoberfest ends.
  • Monday 4 October: San Francesco d'Assisi, the national holiday Italy introduced from 2026, falls on a weekday for the first time since the law took effect.
  • Monday 11 October: Columbus Day (US). Tuesday 12 October: national holidays in Spain and Brazil.
  • 27–31 October: Diwali, with Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October in New Delhi; in the Americas it can fall a day earlier, so check your city.

Avoid in October: the Caribbean and the US Gulf coast, still in hurricane season, and much of Vietnam, Thailand's Gulf coast and the Philippines, in the wet season.

The full month guide: where to go in October (the current edition covers 2026; the destinations and seasons carry over).

November 2027 — The value month

US Thanksgiving, on Thursday 25 November, is the month's one big price-mover, and both World Cup finals fall in the same fortnight.

Oaxaca. Día de Muertos falls on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 November, with marigold altars, candlelit cemetery vigils and comparsas, in the dry season. The trade-off: the festival nights sell out and prices spike; a few days later the city is quiet and cheaper.

Egypt. Luxor's 1991–2020 November normals are 29.1°C (84°F) by day and 13.4°C (56°F) at night, with 0.5 mm of rain, and the Nile cruise season is under way. The trade-off: peak season starts, and crowds at Giza and along the Nile build through the month.

Buenos Aires. Late spring brings 26.0°C (79°F) highs and jacarandas turning the avenues purple, before the city empties in January. The trade-off: it is not a dry month (117.6 mm of rain on the normals), and prices move quickly with inflation.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 November: Día de Muertos; All Saints' Day in Spain and Italy, Finados in Brazil.
  • Saturday 13 November: Rugby World Cup final, Sydney.
  • Sunday 21 November: Cricket World Cup final, Johannesburg.
  • Thursday 25 November: Thanksgiving.
  • Loy Krathong and Yi Peng follow the full moon of the twelfth Thai lunar month; their 2027 dates were not announced as of 5 October 2026.

Avoid in November: Thailand's Gulf islands, central Vietnam (which can flood) and India's Tamil Nadu coast, all still catching rain; and US airports in Thanksgiving week.

The full month guide: where to go in November (2026 edition; the destinations and climate normals carry over).

December 2027 — Markets, dry-season beaches and southern summer

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, so the substitute holidays land on Friday 24 December for US federal employees and on 27–28 December in the UK.

Vienna. In 2026 the Rathausplatz Christmas market runs from 13 November to 26 December; the 2027 dates were not announced as of 5 October 2026. December normals are 4.0°C (39°F) by day and −0.4°C (31°F) at night. The trade-off: most markets close between 23 and 26 December, so go early to mid-month.

Krabi and Railay. The Andaman dry season begins: at Ko Lanta, the nearest normals station, rain drops from 148.4 mm in November to 64.6 mm, under highs of 31.4°C (89°F). The trade-off: rates rise sharply over the Christmas and New Year fortnight; come in the first half of the month.

Rio de Janeiro. Beach season at full tilt, with highs of 28.6°C (83°F), ending with Réveillon on Copacabana on Friday 31 December, which Guinness World Records certifies as the world's largest New Year's celebration. The trade-off: December is Rio's wettest month (169 mm on the 1961–1990 normals), and Réveillon week brings minimum stays.

Key 2027 dates:

  • Monday 6 and Wednesday 8 December: Constitution Day and the Immaculate Conception in Spain; 8 December is also a holiday in Italy.
  • Friday 24 to Tuesday 28 December: the US federal holiday (24th), Christmas Day (25th) and the UK substitute days (27th and 28th).
  • Friday 31 December: New Year's Eve and Réveillon, and the US federal holiday for New Year's Day 2028; 2027 programmes were not announced as of 5 October 2026.

Avoid in December: central Vietnam, where Hoi An and Da Nang can still see rain early in the month, and the Christmas fortnight if weather is your only reason: the monthly normals give no reason to expect a better beach day on 28 December than on 8 December.

Long weekends and public holidays in 2027

National holidays move prices, because domestic travel spikes on long weekends. These are the 2027 holidays in five countries, with the bridge days that stretch them.

United Kingdom

Date Bank holiday Where
Fri 1 Jan New Year's Day UK
Mon 4 Jan 2 January (substitute day) Scotland
Wed 17 Mar St Patrick's Day Northern Ireland
Fri 26 Mar Good Friday UK
Mon 29 Mar Easter Monday England, Wales, Northern Ireland
Mon 3 May Early May bank holiday UK
Mon 31 May Spring bank holiday UK
Mon 12 Jul Battle of the Boyne Northern Ireland
Mon 2 Aug Summer bank holiday Scotland
Mon 30 Aug Summer bank holiday England, Wales, Northern Ireland
Tue 30 Nov St Andrew's Day Scotland
Mon 27 Dec Christmas Day (substitute day) UK
Tue 28 Dec Boxing Day (substitute day) UK

Best bridges: in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, four days of leave on 30 March–2 April give ten days off over Easter (26 March–4 April). Across the UK, three days on 29–31 December give ten, from 25 December to Monday 3 January 2028, itself a bank holiday (eleven in Scotland, where Tuesday 4 January is also off).

United States

Date Federal holiday
Fri 1 Jan New Year's Day
Mon 18 Jan Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mon 15 Feb Washington's Birthday

Fri 18 Jun Juneteenth (observed)
Mon 5 Jul Independence Day (observed)
Mon 6 Sep Labor Day
Mon 11 Oct Columbus Day
Thu 11 Nov Veterans Day
Thu 25 Nov Thanksgiving Day
Fri 24 Dec Christmas Day (observed)
Fri 31 Dec New Year's Day 2028 (observed; in OPM's 2028 list)

When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, most federal employees get the Friday before or the Monday after, according to the Office of Personnel Management; private employers set their own rules. Best bridges: Fridays 12 and 26 November turn Veterans Day and Thanksgiving into four-day weekends, and four days of leave on 27–30 December join the Friday holidays of 24 and 31 December into ten days off, 24 December–2 January.

Spain (derived)

Spain's 2027 list was not in the BOE by 5 October 2026 (the 2026 list is dated 17 October 2025), so this table applies the 2026 pattern to the 2027 calendar. Regions add their own days and may swap some.

Date Holiday Scope
Fri 1 Jan Año Nuevo National
Wed 6 Jan Epifanía National (regions may swap)
Thu 25 Mar Jueves Santo Regional
Fri 26 Mar Viernes Santo National
Mon 29 Mar Lunes de Pascua Regional

Tue 12 Oct Fiesta Nacional de España National
Mon 1 Nov Todos los Santos National
Mon 6 Dec Día de la Constitución National
Wed 8 Dec Inmaculada Concepción National
Sat 25 Dec Navidad National

Best bridges: December is the year's best. One day of leave (Tuesday 7) gives five days off, 4–8 December, and three (7, 9 and 10 December) give nine, 4–12 December. Monday 11 October makes a four-day weekend, and All Saints a three-day one.

Italy

Date Holiday
Fri 1 Jan Capodanno
Wed 6 Jan Epifania
Mon 29 Mar Lunedì dell'Angelo (Easter Monday)
Sun 25 Apr Festa della Liberazione

Sat 25 Dec Natale
Sun 26 Dec Santo Stefano

Five fall on a weekend in 2027: 25 April, 1 May, 15 August and 25–26 December. Best ponti: two days of leave on 4–5 January give six days off from New Year's Day to Epiphany; 4 October and 1 November are Monday long weekends; and 2 June and 8 December, both Wednesdays, become five days off with two days of leave.

Brazil (derived)

Brazil's federal 2027 list was not out by 5 October 2026 (the 2026 list was published on 30 December 2025), so this table applies the 2026 list to the 2027 calendar. Optional days apply to federal offices, and states and cities add their own holidays.

Date Holiday Status
Fri 1 Jan Confraternização Universal National holiday
Mon 8–Tue 9 Feb Carnaval Optional day (ponto facultativo)
Wed 10 Feb Quarta-Feira de Cinzas Optional until 14:00
Fri 26 Mar Paixão de Cristo National holiday

Sat 1 May Dia do Trabalho National holiday
Thu 27 May Corpus Christi Optional day
Tue 7 Sep Independência National holiday
Tue 12 Oct Nossa Senhora Aparecida National holiday
Tue 2 Nov Finados National holiday
Mon 15 Nov Proclamação da República National holiday
Sat 20 Nov Consciência Negra National holiday
Sat 25 Dec Natal National holiday

The 2026 list also gave federal staff 28 October (Public Servants' Day) and the afternoons of 24 and 31 December. Best bridges: a Monday off before the Tuesday holidays of 7 September, 12 October and 2 November gives three four-day weekends, and Monday 15 November makes a ready-made three-day one. In 2026 the government made two bridge days optional (20 April and 5 June).

Practical tips for planning 2027

  • Book the fixed dates first. Eclipse beds in Cádiz province, Ceuta and Upper Egypt, Santiago around 25 July, Seoul in World Youth Day week, Munich for Oktoberfest and Edinburgh for the Fringe go early. The Cricket World Cup ballot closes on 21 November 2026.
  • Plan around two Easters. Western Easter is 28 March and Orthodox Easter 2 May, so Spain and Italy peak in late March and Greece in late April.
  • Watch other countries' holidays. Golden Week, Kurban Bayramı, Obon and Thanksgiving week fill transport and hotels in their own countries.
  • Buy proper eclipse glasses. Use ISO 12312-2 viewers for the partial phases, and never behind binoculars, a camera or a telescope.
  • Recheck what is not out yet. Spain's BOE list usually appears in October and Brazil's federal list at the end of December; Christmas market dates, Loy Krathong, Seville's final Feria dates and the Holy Door ceremony come later.
