This guide is for anyone who wants 31 December somewhere cold and white: a resort with a torchlit show, a cabin where the sun doesn't rise, or a sledge run open until 23:00. It covers 15 places in three groups, each with 2026/27 dates, prices and an honest downside.
Every date, price and rule was read on the resort's, operator's or authority's own page on 4 October 2026; press figures are marked. Where a 2026 New Year programme isn't published, we say so and give last season's. Daylight times are US Naval Observatory (USNO) calculations for 31 December 2026, and conversions use European Central Bank rates of 2 October 2026.
For a city at midnight, see where to spend New Year's Eve; for the week before, where to spend Christmas.

Ski resorts with a real New Year's Eve
These seven resorts run a New Year show or programme; where the 2026 edition isn't published, last season's timings are given and labelled.
1. Méribel — fireworks twice, torches at 18:30
Méribel's tourist office posted one of the fullest New Year programmes we found for 2025. Fireworks went up at 18:00 from three spots, including La Chaudanne and Mottaret, and ESF instructors skied down with torches from 18:30 at the Mottaret snow front. From 22:30 to 01:30 La Chaudanne became an open-air club with a La Folie Douce show, DJs and more fireworks at midnight. The 2026 programme isn't out yet.
Lifts open on 5 December 2026. A Les 3 Vallées adult pass costs €84.20 a day from 19 December to 2 April and €421 for six days; from 5 to 11 December a day costs €75.70. The Family Flex pass charges everyone the child rate in groups of three or more with at least one child and at most two adults. The sun sets at 17:00 on 31 December (USNO).
Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains station is 18 km away, and Altibus coaches run from Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry airports. Drivers need winter tyres or chains from 1 November to 31 March.
The trade-off: the top price band starts on 19 December, and the midnight party is a crowd.
2. St. Anton am Arlberg — an LED ski show the night before
St. Anton's holiday show falls on 30 December: Schneetreiben, at the Karl-Schranz-Zielstadion at 21:00, about 45 minutes on the history of skiing with skiers in glowing LED suits. Entry is free; the Show-Lounge with a three-course buffet costs €47 for adults and €27 for children aged 5 to 12. The first four people to email the tourist office between Monday 10:00 and Wednesday 12:00, with good skiing skills, join the closing torchlight descent. Nothing was listed for 31 December, and the Arlberger New Year's Concert follows on 3 January 2027.
Ski Arlberg opens on 2 December 2026, with more than 300 km of marked runs, 85 lifts and the Valluga at 2,811 m. Its provisional 2026/27 ticket guide, dated August 2026 and subject to change, lists an adult day pass at €85 in the main season from 19 December and €80.50 before it. Sunset on 31 December is at 16:39 (USNO).
St. Anton is a Railjet stop with seven direct trains a day from Vienna and from Zurich, and Innsbruck airport is about 100 km away.
The trade-off: 200 km of off-piste terrain is the draw and the danger, so read the avalanche bulletin daily and hire a guide.
3. Zermatt — snow security first, party second
Zermatt is the pick when snow cover matters more than a programme. The 2026/27 season starts on 1 November, the Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat areas follow on 28 November, and skiing runs to 3 May 2027, with lifts reaching 3,883 m. Prices are dynamic: a day from CHF 89 (about €96), six days from CHF 384 (about €414), or CHF 432 (about €466) including Cervinia, with the lowest rates in November.
New Year's Eve is unscripted: Zermatt Tourism's events calendar listed nothing for 31 December on 4 October 2026, so build the night around a restaurant booking. Valais is also where a bar fire in Crans-Montana killed 41 people on the night of 31 December 2025 to 1 January 2026; since 1 April 2026 Swiss rules ban pyrotechnics such as bottle sparklers in indoor venues open to the public. The sun is up from 08:11 to 16:53 on 31 December (USNO).
The village is car-free. Trains run straight in, about 3.5 hours from Zurich Airport, and drivers park in Täsch for a 12-minute shuttle train every 20 minutes.
The trade-off: no resort-wide party has been announced, and dynamic prices rise as dates fill.
4. Alta Badia — a torchlit ski show on New Year's Day
Alta Badia saves its show for the evening of New Year's Day. On 1 January 2027, from 21:00 to 22:00 on the Col Alto slope in Corvara, instructors from the Corvara ski school run the Defilada de Nanü, a torchlight descent and ski show with the Carabinieri, a DJ and the lighting-up of the Sassongher peak.
The season runs from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with the Sellaronda circuit due to open on 4 December, weather permitting. Alta Badia is part of Dolomiti Superski, where about 1,100 of the 1,200 km of runs have snowmaking. According to Money.it (press, 29 September 2026), the adult day pass costs €89 in high season, 20 December to 9 January, and €80 in regular season. Until 19 December, Dolomiti Superpremière hotels offer four nights and four ski days for the price of three.
Corvara sits at 1,568 m, and the sun sets at 16:35 on 31 December (USNO). Brunico/Bruneck station is just over 30 km away, with buses several times a day.
The trade-off: the show is on 1 January, so New Year's Eve is a dinner night, and high-season prices cover the whole fortnight.
5. Livigno — instructors' torches and a cheaper pass
Livigno's ski area opens on 28 November 2026 and runs to 2 May 2027. The adult day pass costs €51.50 until 18 December, €66 from 19 to 25 December and €74.50 from 26 December to 8 January; six high-season days cost €374.50.
The 2026 New Year programme isn't published. The tourism board's description of the tradition, written in 2018, has ski instructors carrying torches down the Campo Scuola slopes from 18:00, with anyone able to join for a €5 torch, a bonfire at the bottom and fireworks over the village at midnight.
The village sits at 1,816 m, the sun sets at 16:42 on 31 December (USNO), and there is no railway. Trains reach Tirano from Milano Centrale, or Zernez on the Rhaetian Railway, with buses on to Livigno, and in winter the Livigno Express shuttle runs daily from the main airports. By car, the Foscagno Pass (2,291 m) is open all year and requires winter tyres or chains from 15 October to 30 April; the Forcola Pass closes in winter.
The trade-off: transfers are long, and the New Year details come from an eight-year-old description.
6. Whistler — fireworks at 21:00, no midnight show
Whistler's municipality ran an early, alcohol-free New Year's Eve in 2025. The Luminosity parade left the Whistler Conference Centre for Skier's Plaza at 19:45, the Fire & Ice show ran from 20:30 to 21:00, and fireworks followed at 21:00. There were no midnight fireworks, most events were free, and so was local transit. Details for 31 December 2026 are due later this year.
Whistler Blackcomb targets opening day on 20 November 2026. Vail Resorts' lowest autumn price for the 2026/27 Epic Pass was US$1,119 (about €1,000) for adults, on sale until 7 September. Environment Canada's 1981–2010 normals for the Whistler station (658 m) show a December average of −2.8 °C (27 °F), 114 cm of snowfall and 49 cm of snow on the ground at month's end. The sun is up from 08:11 to 16:19 on 31 December (USNO).
British Columbia requires winter tyres or chains on most routes from 1 October to 30 April, so check the routes before driving up from Vancouver.
The trade-off: the public show ends at 21:00 and is dry, so midnight means a ticketed bar or your own chalet.
7. Niseko — fireworks and taiko drums at Hirafu
Niseko is the snowfall pick: Japan Meteorological Agency normals for Kutchan, the town below the slopes, give 253 cm of snow in December and a mean of −3.1 °C (26 °F). In 2025, Grand Hirafu's New Year's Eve show started at 20:00 near the Ace Gondola base, with more than 1,000 fireworks timed to Yotei Taiko drummers (STEEP ski magazine). Niseko United's 2023 round-up also listed countdown fireworks at Niseko Village and torchlight skiing at Annupuri. The 2026 programme isn't out.
The season starts on 28 November 2026 at Grand Hirafu and Annupuri. An adult All Mountain day pass, valid at all four resorts, costs ¥8,800 (about €50) until 11 December, ¥12,600 (about €71) from 12 to 23 December and ¥13,500 (about €76) from 24 December to 28 February. The sun is up from 07:08 to 16:12 on 31 December (USNO). From New Chitose Airport, trains via Otaru and Kutchan take about 2.5 to 3 hours, with limited services.
The trade-off: off-piste is gate-only under the Niseko Rules: backcountry skiers should wear a helmet and carry an avalanche transceiver, rope-duckers risk losing their pass, and rescues are billed from ¥100,000 (about €565).
Remote cabins and huts
These picks swap the party for silence. For aurora odds region by region, see our northern lights guide.
8. Finnish Lapland — aurora cabins on Lake Inari
Wilderness Hotel Nellim, on Lake Inari about 45 minutes by car from Ivalo airport, sells Aurora Cabins for up to four people from €648 a night. Its winter season runs from 24 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, and Finavia lists daily flights from Helsinki to Ivalo. On 31 December the sun stays below the horizon at Nellim, with civil twilight from 09:37 to 14:42 (USNO).
The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) says auroras appear on roughly half of dark, cloudless nights at the Lapland ski resorts of Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä, and on about 75% at Kilpisjärvi; its best months are March and early April.
In Rovaniemi, where the sun is up from 11:01 to 13:40 on 31 December, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel sells a New Year package with a three-night minimum and a New Year's Eve dinner with a countdown, at a demand-based rate. VR night trains run from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi, with private cabins from €49, and tickets for December 2026 were on sale.
The trade-off: cloud can hide the sky for days, so treat an aurora on 31 December as a bonus.
9. Swedish Lapland — Icehotel 37 opens on 11 December
ICEHOTEL 37 in Jukkasjärvi opens on 11 December 2026. Its ice rooms and art suites, open from December to April, stay at around −5 °C (23 °F), with sleeping bags and reindeer hides, breakfast, sauna access and a loaned snowsuit and boots. Nightly prices sit inside the booking engine, and the two-night opening package at SEK 25,995 (about €2,300) per person had sold out by 4 October.
The hotel is 17 km east of Kiruna, 15 to 20 minutes from the airport and station. Flights from Stockholm take 90 minutes, and the train from Stockholm takes about 14 hours. From December to April you can arrive by dog sled, a 75-minute transfer. On 31 December the sun doesn't rise at Jukkasjärvi; civil twilight runs from 08:53 to 14:28 (USNO).
Further south in Harads, Treehotel's Mirrorcube costs from SEK 6,900 (about €610) a night for two with breakfast, depending on the season, with an incineration toilet and showers in a nearby building.
The trade-off: a night at −5 °C is an experience you book once, so plan the rest of the stay in a warm room.
10. Malangen, Norway — a fjord cabin an hour from Tromsø
Malangen Resort sits on a fjord a one-hour drive south of Tromsø and runs transfers from the city and the airport several times a day. It rents three-bedroom cabins for up to six (two-night minimum) and hotel rooms, and runs dog sledding, snowmobile and snowshoe trips and aurora evenings at its own wilderness camp. Its booking calendar on 4 October 2026 showed nightly prices for two from NOK 2,660 (about €246) in early December and NOK 13,965 (about €1,290) for 29 to 31 December.
Visit Tromsø puts the polar night at roughly 27 November to 15 January, with a few hours of twilight a day; at Malangen, civil twilight on 31 December runs from 09:24 to 14:12 (USNO). Tromsø lies beneath the auroral oval, and the aurora season runs from late August to early April.
Norwegian rules allow private fireworks only on New Year's Eve between 18:00 and 02:00, and rockets with guide sticks are banned. For ski touring, read Varsom, the avalanche service of Norway's water directorate and meteorological institute.
The trade-off: nights from 25 to 31 December cost more than five times an early-December night.
11. Rifugio Lagazuoi — New Year's Eve at 2,752 metres
Rifugio Lagazuoi stands 50 m from the top station of the Lagazuoi cable car above Passo Falzarego, at 2,752 m, with 74 beds in rooms and dorms and what the cable car company calls the highest Finnish sauna in the Dolomites. Its winter 2026/27 price list includes a New Year's Eve dinner at €130 a head, on top of a dorm bed at €85 per person with breakfast or a double room from €250; half-board dinner is €35. Bookings need a 50% deposit that is never refunded, and cancelling within three days of arrival costs the full amount. On 5 October 2026 the refuge's site said only that it reopens in December, while Alta Badia's lift list shows the Lagazuoi cable car running from 5 December 2026 to 3 April 2027.
The sun sets at 16:34 on 31 December (USNO). Next morning you can ski down if the runs are open: the technical Lagazuoi run drops 635 m over 2.47 km to the pass, and the gentle Armentarola run covers 8.5 km down to 1,660 m, with a horse-drawn tow towards the Alta Badia lifts. Last winter Alta Badia listed the Armentarola as open from 29 December and the Lagazuoi run only from 1 February. Before leaving the pistes, check the Veneto avalanche bulletin through AINEVA.
The trade-off: you pay for the view with a bunk at altitude, a non-refundable deposit and the refuge's opening date still unconfirmed.
12. Skoki Lodge, Canada — 11 km on skis to a lodge without electricity
Skoki Lodge in Banff National Park is open for winter from 18 December 2026 to 5 April 2027. The way in is an 11 km trail from the Lake Louise Ski Area, on skis, to a lodge at 2,164 m. It sleeps 22 guests in the main lodge and three cabins, with kerosene lamps, wood or coal stoves and outhouses, and no electricity, running water, phone signal or Wi-Fi. Meals are included; rates aren't posted online, and bookings go by phone or email. A 50% deposit is due at booking and the balance 60 days before arrival, so a New Year's stay must be paid by about 1 November.
Environment Canada's 1981–2010 normals for Lake Louise (1,524 m) give a December average of −13.0 °C (9 °F). At Lake Louise the sun is up from 08:50 to 16:46 on 31 December (USNO). The lodge asks guests to check Parks Canada or Avalanche Canada forecasts and to enter avalanche terrain only with training, partners, a plan and equipment.
The trade-off: this is the most committing trip here, so pick a lodge with road access if 11 km on skis in deep cold sounds hard.
Alpine adventures for the holiday week
Three ways to fill the days between Christmas and New Year: a late-night sledge run, a panoramic train and a first ice climb.
13. Preda–Bergün — night sledging with the train as your lift
Bergün's 6 km sledge run from Preda is a Swiss classic: the Rhaetian Railway carries you up over viaducts and through spiral tunnels, and you slide back down. In 2026/27 the run is open from 19 December 2026 to 14 March 2027, from 09:30 to 23:00 Tuesday to Sunday and until 17:00 on Mondays. Two exceptions matter: it closes at 17:00 on 24 and 31 December and stays open until 23:00 on Monday 28 December. Plan your night run for 28, 29 or 30 December or New Year's Day.
A day card for the Preda and Darlux runs, train included, costs CHF 44 (about €47) for adults and CHF 22 (about €24) for children aged 5 to 15; a single Preda run with the train costs CHF 19 (about €20). The 4.5 km Darlux run is faster and closes at 16:30. Sledges can be hired in Bergün, and dogs aren't allowed on the runs. The sun sets at 16:43 on 31 December (USNO).
The trade-off: there is no evening sledging on 24 or 31 December, and a fast run in the dark calls for a helmet and steady control.
14. Glacier Express — eight hours from Zermatt to St. Moritz
The Glacier Express crosses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels on its eight-hour run between Zermatt and St. Moritz. It doesn't run from 11 October to 4 December 2026, and the 2026/27 winter timetable wasn't published on 4 October. Last winter, two trains a day ran in each direction from 13 December to 4 January: from Zermatt at 07:52 and 08:52, reaching St. Moritz at 15:37 and 16:37, and from St. Moritz at 08:38 and 09:38, reaching Zermatt at 17:07 and 18:07.
Second class for the whole route costs up to CHF 159 plus a compulsory CHF 54 seat reservation, CHF 213 (about €230) in all; Excellence Class adds a CHF 540 (about €582) reservation to a first-class ticket. Travel cards such as the Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Travelcard cover or reduce the fare; the reservation is always extra. Tickets go on sale 180 days ahead and seat reservations 93 days ahead, with December journeys bookable from mid-October. On 31 December the sun sets at 16:53 in Zermatt and 16:43 in St. Moritz (USNO).
The trade-off: it takes a whole day of a short holiday week, so use it as your transfer between Zermatt and St. Moritz.
15. Cogne — ice climbing for beginners in the Aosta Valley
Cogne's tourism consortium counts more than 150 frozen waterfalls in the valley, drawing climbers from across Europe, and the local mountain guides list over 300 possible routes, from training falls to hard pillars. The guides' introductory session lasts about four hours, needs no experience and takes up to four people: €350 for one, €190 each for two, €135 each for three and €105 each for four, with guide, harness, helmet, ice axes and crampons included. Their two-day course, for people who have climbed ice at least once, costs €800 for one person and down to €270 each for six. These prices come from the guides' winter programme sheets, labelled 2025.
Conditions decide everything. The guides stress that safe ice climbing needs a precise knowledge of the ice and of temperature trends through the winter, which is why you go with a local guide, and they recommend a rescue insurance policy offered to clients of Aosta Valley guides. The sun is up from 08:11 to 16:56 on 31 December (USNO).
The trade-off: a warm spell can make the falls unsafe, so keep a spare day in your plans.
Safety in the snow: avalanches, cold, roads and fireworks
- Read the avalanche bulletin daily: SLF in Switzerland (17:00 daily in winter, White Risk app), Avalanche.report for Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino, AINEVA and Meteomont in Italy, Météo-France, Varsom and Avalanche Canada.
- Go off-piste only with a guide. GOV.UK calls off-piste skiing very dangerous because of avalanches and advises insurance covering mountain rescue, helicopter costs and repatriation.
- Respect the cold. The NHS says frostbite can happen at 0 °C (32 °F) or below; wear loose layers under a waterproof shell, a hat, gloves and thick socks.
- Equip the car. Winter tyres or chains are required in French mountain areas from 1 November to 31 March, on the Foscagno Pass from 15 October to 30 April and on most British Columbia routes from 1 October to 30 April. Austria needs a vignette; Zermatt is car-free beyond Täsch.
- Know the fireworks rules. Swiss indoor venues open to the public have banned pyrotechnics since 1 April 2026, after the Crans-Montana fire killed 41 people. Norway allows private fireworks only from 18:00 to 02:00 on 31 December.
Practical tips
- Book now and read the deposit terms. Skoki's balance is due 60 days before arrival, Lagazuoi keeps its 50% deposit, and minimum stays apply at Arctic TreeHouse (three nights) and Malangen's cabins (two).
- Ski before 19 December if you can. Méribel's day pass is €75.70 in early December and €84.20 from 19 December; Livigno's rises on 19 and 26 December; Niseko's peak rate starts on 24 December.
- Check holiday hours. Bergün's run closes at 17:00 on 24 and 31 December, and Whistler's buses were free on New Year's Eve 2025.
- Take the train. St. Anton has seven direct Railjets a day from Vienna and from Zurich, Zermatt is 3.5 hours by rail from Zurich Airport, and night trains reach Rovaniemi.
- Match the trip to the group. Families: Méribel's Family Flex pass, Whistler's 21:00 show, Bergün's CHF 22 child card. Couples: Lagazuoi, Skoki, Malangen.
- Pack for deep cold with our travel packing checklist, plus liner gloves, a buff and a head torch.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which ski resort has the best New Year's Eve celebration?
On published programmes, Méribel's was the fullest in 2025, with fireworks at 18:00 and midnight, an ESF torchlight descent and an open-air club. St. Anton's LED ski show runs on 30 December 2026, and Alta Badia's torchlit show on 1 January 2027.
Where is snow most reliable over New Year?
Altitude and snowmaking help most. Zermatt's lifts reach 3,883 m and its season starts on 1 November, Dolomiti Superski has snowmaking on about 1,100 km of runs, and Kutchan, below Niseko, averages 253 cm of December snow.
Can I see the northern lights on New Year's Eve?
Yes, if the sky is clear. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says auroras appear on about half of dark, cloudless nights at Lapland resorts such as Levi and Saariselkä. Cloud is the main risk.
Do hotels require a minimum stay over New Year?
Some do. Arctic TreeHouse Hotel's New Year package requires three nights and Malangen Resort's cabins two, and Malangen's calendar showed NOK 13,965 (about €1,290) a night for 31 December.
Is it safe to ski off-piste during the holiday week?
Only with a certified guide, the day's avalanche bulletin, a transceiver, probe and shovel, and insurance that covers mountain rescue and helicopters. SLF, Varsom and Avalanche Canada publish daily bulletins.
Are fireworks and sparklers allowed at ski resorts?
It depends on the country. Switzerland has banned pyrotechnics such as bottle sparklers in indoor venues open to the public since 1 April 2026, and Norway allows private fireworks only from 18:00 to 02:00 on New Year's Eve.
