New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, so 1 January 2027 is a Friday and a long weekend is within reach. This guide covers 16 places to spend it: eight where you can count down in a T-shirt and eight classic cold-weather celebrations.

Every date, price and rule below was read on official pages (organisers, cities, tourism boards, governments and national weather services) on 4 October 2026; where only press coverage existed, we name the outlet. Many 2026/27 programmes are not out yet, so when a detail is missing we say so and give last year's arrangement. Weather figures are long-term December averages.

For snow, ski resorts or a remote cabin, read our guide to New Year's Eve in the snow. For the week before, start with where to spend Christmas.

Warm New Year's Eve destinations

Eight places where midnight is warm or at least mild. Rio, Sydney and Cape Town are in full summer, Dubai and Bangkok average only one or two rainy days in December, and Madeira and Gran Canaria stay mild without leaving Europe. For more ideas, see where to go in December.

1. Rio de Janeiro — the biggest beach party on the calendar

Copacabana's Réveillon is the warm-weather benchmark. Guinness World Records recognised it as the world's biggest New Year's Eve, counting 2.5 million people on the beach, and the city received the title on 30 December 2025. Tradition says you wear white.

The city had not published its 2026/27 plan as of 4 October 2026; line-up and transport details usually arrive in December. Last year's show used 19 barges for 12 minutes of fireworks, plus a 1,200-drone display and 13 stages across the city.

In 2025 Copacabana closed to all vehicles from 21:00, and the metro ran a special 19:00–05:00 service with a R$15 (about €2.60) round-trip pass sold only through MetrôRio's app or website. The city put 1,370 public-order agents on the streets and banned vendors from selling glass bottles.

INMET's normals (via the WMO) give December highs of 29°C (84°F), lows of 22°C (72°F) and 169 mm of rain, so pack a light rain layer. Book a Rio room within walking distance of the beach as early as you can.

The trade-off: the UK Foreign Office warns that pickpocketing is common and that criminals target big celebrations, so carry a phone, one card and little else.

2. Sydney — two harbour shows, one long wait

Sydney has two shows: the 21:00 Calling Country fireworks, presented by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, and the midnight display launched from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and other landmarks. The City of Sydney lists 48 vantage points.

Some of the best are already gone for 2026. Clark, Goat and Shark islands and Bradleys Head show as sold out, and the free Cahill Expressway ballot opened on 3 September. Still to come: Lower Bradfield Park tickets from 09:00 on 7 October and free Opera House forecourt tickets from 10:00 on 26 December. Taronga Zoo sells packages from A$125 to A$1,000 (about €77 to €618).

Most free vantage points are alcohol-free in 2026, glass and large bags are often banned, and most sites do not let you back in once you leave. Transport details are due in November; the city says public transport is the only way to travel that night.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Observatory Hill records give December highs of 25°C (77°F), lows of 18°C (64°F) and about eight rainy days, so follow the city's advice and pack sunscreen, a hat and wet-weather gear.

The trade-off: a good free spot means arriving early and staying put until after midnight, often without a drink.

3. Cape Town — a long summer evening at the V&A Waterfront

Cape Town is the gentler southern-hemisphere option. Last year the V&A Waterfront ran a free programme from 18:00 to 01:00 with live acts and DJs and a controlled five-minute fireworks display at midnight, according to Time Out; we could not open the V&A's own page. Organisers asked people not to bring their own seating and to arrive by public transport or e-hailing.

The 2026/27 programme had not been announced as of 4 October 2026. Consider staying into January for the Cape Town Street Parade, the minstrel carnival whose troupes were long called the Kaapse Klopse. It traditionally fell on 2 January, Tweede Nuwe Jaar, but Cape Town Tourism listed the 2026 parade on 5 January, running from Somerset Road to the DHL Stadium. The 2027 date is not out yet.

December is warm and dry. South African Weather Service normals (via the WMO) give highs of 25°C (77°F), lows of 15°C (59°F) and just 17 mm of rain, so pack a layer for after dark.

The trade-off: the fireworks are deliberately short, and the carnival date moves, so do not build flights around it until it is confirmed.

4. Dubai — the Burj Khalifa show, free or ticketed

Dubai turns New Year's Eve into a citywide fireworks map: 48 shows at 40 locations last year, according to the Dubai Media Office. The one most visitors come for is at the Burj Khalifa in Downtown.

There are two ways to watch. The public viewing areas along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard are free and first come, first served, with no tickets or badges. Burj Park is the ticketed option: last year it cost AED 997.5 (about $272) including VAT for adults and AED 577.5 (about $157) for children aged 5 to 12, food not included, with gates from 12:00. As of 4 October 2026, Emaar's event site still showed last year's details.

Road closures began at 16:00 last year and widened until 23:00, and taxis cannot enter Downtown once they start. The metro's Red and Green lines ran nonstop from 05:00 on 31 December to 23:59 on 1 January. Public beaches were families-only that night.

The National Center of Meteorology's normals (via the WMO) give December highs of 26°C (79°F) and lows of 15°C (59°F). Choose a Dubai hotel near a metro station.

The trade-off: to see the main show you commit to Downtown by mid-afternoon and stand for hours.

5. Funchal, Madeira — fireworks around a natural amphitheatre

Funchal's hillsides rise straight from the bay, so its New Year's fireworks surround you. In 2006 Guinness recognised the show as the world's largest fireworks display, and the official events listing puts the 2026/27 show at 23:59 on 31 December, lasting about eight minutes.

The regional government has already fixed the plan: 59 launch sites, 57 of them in Funchal (27 on the hillsides, 25 along the waterfront and five platforms at sea) and two on Porto Santo, under a resolution approved on 2 July 2026 and reported by DNoticias. Madeira's official journal sets a budget of €401,247 plus VAT for the central Funchal show across 2026/27 and 2027/28. The wider Christmas and New Year festivities run from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.

Crowds watch from land and sea: the seafront costs nothing, and if you want a terrace dinner or a boat trip, book early. IPMA's 1991–2020 normals for Funchal give December highs of 21°C (70°F) and lows of 16°C (60°F), and December is the city's wettest month, with rain on about nine days.

The trade-off: the weather can bite. Last year bad weather led organisers to move the main square programme earlier, cancel one show and close marked hiking trails until midday on 1 January, Observador reported.

6. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — an all-night street party with 22°C days

Las Palmas pairs a city beach with an all-night public party run by the council, which moves the venue around. Last year's celebration ran from 22:00 to 05:30 at Santa Catalina with live bands, DJs and fireworks. The year before, it sat beside Las Canteras beach, where 270 kg of fireworks lit the sky for 15 minutes from midnight and entry was free until the space filled.

The 2026/27 venue and line-up had not been announced as of 4 October 2026. Last year the council published its Christmas programme on 21 November, covering 26 November to 6 January, so look for news around then.

AEMET's 1991–2020 normals for Gran Canaria airport, as filed with the World Meteorological Organization, give December highs of 22°C (72°F), lows of 17°C (62°F), 25.9 mm of rain and 188 hours of sunshine. Stay near Santa Catalina or Las Canteras so you can walk home after a party that ends at 05:30.

The trade-off: the venue changes every year and can be confirmed late, so you book your room before you know where the stage will be.

7. Bangkok — countdowns along the Chao Phraya

Bangkok stacks several countdowns into one night. Last year the Tourism Authority of Thailand listed a five-day riverside festival at ICONSIAM from 27 to 31 December, with a show of eco-friendly fireworks, drones and pyrotechnics over the Chao Phraya. CentralWorld held its own countdown with fireworks, One Bangkok staged a light-and-sound show, and fireworks ran along more than 5 km of Sukhumvit Road.

The 2026/27 line-up had not been announced as of 4 October 2026; last year's official round-up only appeared on 25 December, so book your room first and pick your countdown later. All four MRT lines ran until 02:00 on New Year's night, which helps if you stay near a station.

The Thai Meteorological Department's normals (via the WMO) give December highs of 31°C (88°F), lows of 21°C (70°F) and about one rainy day in the month. If the ICONSIAM show is your goal, book a Bangkok hotel near the river early.

The trade-off: the big countdowns draw dense crowds, and once the MRT stopped at 02:00 last year, late stayers needed another way home.

8. Nassau, Bahamas — Junkanoo at 02:00

Nassau's big moment comes after midnight. The Junkanoo parade takes over Bay Street at 02:00 on 1 January: large groups in elaborate costumes play goatskin drums, horns, bells and whistles while thousands watch and dance along. It also runs on Boxing Day, and UNESCO added Junkanoo to its intangible cultural heritage list in 2023.

Bleacher seats are sold for each parade. Last year 8,056 seats per parade went on sale on 8 December through the ALIV Events app and ALIV stores in New Providence, priced from B$27.50 plus VAT up to B$250 plus VAT for a new skybox pavilion, according to The Tribune; we found no official ticketing page. The Bahamian dollar trades at par with the US dollar. Ticket dates for 2026/27 have not been announced.

The Bahamas Department of Meteorology's normals (via the WMO) give December highs of 26°C (79°F) and lows of 18°C (64°F), so a light jacket covers the small hours. Staying downtown keeps Bay Street within walking distance, which matters when the parade starts at 02:00.

The trade-off: the best part happens deep into the night, and last year bleacher sales opened only on 8 December, so you commit to flights and rooms before you can buy a seat.

Cold and classic New Year's Eve

Eight celebrations where you dress for single-digit temperatures. Prague and the Netherlands now restrict fireworks, while London and Edinburgh sell tickets for their main events. If you stay on, our guide to where to go in January picks up from here.

9. Edinburgh — Hogmanay over three nights

Edinburgh's Hogmanay spreads across three nights. The Torchlight Procession is set for 18:30 on 29 December at The Meadows (tickets from £5.75, about €7, coming soon), and the Night Afore Party with The Fratellis follows on 30 December.

On 31 December the Street Party opens at 20:00 on Princes Street, with the castle as backdrop, live music, street theatre and the midnight fireworks. It is on sale now: general admission was £39 (about €46) when we checked, including a £3.50 booking fee and a 50p charity donation, with a later tier listed at £45 and £33 for EH-postcode residents. Your ticket fixes your entry gate, entry is 12+ (under-16s need an adult), bags must be no bigger than A3, and alcohol is allowed only in plastic or cans up to 500 ml, four per person. Hogmanay in the Gardens with Underworld costs from £79 (about €93) and excludes the Street Party.

Last year trams were free from 00:00 to 05:00 and ScotRail wound down from about 19:00. The Met Office gives December highs of 7°C (45°F), lows of 2°C (36°F) and 12 rainy days. Scotland's bank holidays fall on 1 and 4 January 2027.

The trade-off: this is a gated party in a Scottish winter, with about 49 hours of sunshine in the whole of December.

10. London — the Thames fireworks, by ticket only

London's show is short and ticketed. Last year's 12 minutes opened with Big Ben's chimes and filled the sky around the London Eye, watched by around 100,000 ticket holders. Without a ticket you cannot enter the riverside viewing areas.

For 2026 the Mayor of London's page lists the event from 20:00 on 31 December to 00:30, with the ticket release date "announced soon" as of 4 October 2026; you can register there for an alert. Last year the first tickets went on sale at midday on 17 October and the final batch on 24 November, at £20–£35 for Londoners (about €24–€41) and £40–£55 for everyone else (about €47–€65), sold only through Ticketmaster.

TfL services ran all night last year, though stations can close at short notice to prevent overcrowding and some central buses divert from about midday. The Met Office gives Heathrow December highs of 9°C (48°F) and lows of 3°C (37°F). Base yourself in London on a line that reaches the centre without changes.

The trade-off: you plan around sale dates weeks in advance for a show that lasts 12 minutes.

11. Reykjavík — bonfires first, then everyone's fireworks

Reykjavík's New Year's Eve is homemade: Visit Reykjavík notes there is no official fireworks display. Locals head to neighbourhood bonfires (ten last year, most lit at 20:30), then gather round the TV for Áramótaskaup, the comedy review of the year that empties the streets from about 22:30 to 23:35. Then residents launch their own fireworks.

Iceland's rules are precise. Shops may sell the bigger fireworks only from 28 December to 6 January, people may use them only in that window, and never between 22:00 and 10:00 except on New Year's night. Buyers must be 16 or 18 for the bigger classes, and fireworks are banned at the bonfires. Last year's bonfire list was posted on 29 December.

The smoke is real. The city measured PM10 at 633 µg/m³ between midnight and 01:00 on 1 January 2025, against a 24-hour health limit of 50.

Our calculation from Icelandic Met Office records for 1991–2020 gives December highs of 3°C (37°F), lows of −2°C (28°F) and about 13 hours of sunshine in the whole month. On a clear night, add an aurora hunt from our northern lights guide.

The trade-off: daylight is scarce and the midnight air is smoky, so anyone with asthma may prefer to watch from indoors.

12. Vienna — waltzing in the streets

Vienna's New Year's Eve is free and musical. The Silvesterpfad runs from 14:00 on 31 December 2026 to 02:00, with food and drink stalls from 11:00 and eight free locations, from the Graben to Rathausplatz and the Riesenradplatz in the Prater. Dance schools teach quick waltz lessons on the Graben in the afternoon, and at midnight the crowd dances to the Pummerin bell of St Stephen's and the Blue Danube. Private rockets and bangers (category F2 and up) are banned across the city.

The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert at 11:15 on 1 January 2027, conducted by Tugan Sokhiev, needed a lottery entry by 28 February 2026. The same draw covered the preview on 30 December and the New Year's Eve concert at 19:30, with seats from €25 to €1,320 across the three.

Last year the U-Bahn ran through the night, but Stephansplatz station closed from 21:00 for safety, according to the news site 5 Minuten. Our calculation from GeoSphere Austria data for 1991–2020 gives inner-city December highs of 5°C (41°F) and lows of 1°C (34°F). More on Vienna.

The trade-off: the old town gets crowded enough that Stephansplatz station shut at 21:00 last year, and the famous concert needs planning ten months ahead.

13. Berlin — the Brandenburg Gate party, if it returns

Berlin's open-air party at the Brandenburg Gate was long counted among the world's biggest, but the 2026/27 edition is unconfirmed: as of 4 October 2026, berlin.de said it was not yet known whether a party is planned. Last year's version was a free DJ party for 20,000 people with fireworks, on Platz des 18. März and Straße des 17. Juni, served by the S1, S2, S25, S26 and U5 and buses 100, M41 and N5.

The rest of the city celebrates on its own terms. German law lets adults set off category 2 fireworks on 31 December and 1 January, though never near churches, hospitals, children's homes or care homes, so expect bangs on residential streets. Indoor parties fill the calendar: berlin.de already lists ticketed events for 31 December 2026, including the Kulturbrauerei's 26th indoor party.

The German Weather Service's 1991–2020 averages for Tempelhof give a December mean of 2°C (36°F), about 14 frost days and 41 hours of sunshine. Pick a Berlin base on an S-Bahn line.

The trade-off: the signature party may not happen, and the street fireworks make some neighbourhoods loud well past midnight.

14. Prague — a quieter New Year without rockets

Prague suits people who want the old town at midnight with fewer bangs. Since 8 July 2026, city decree 12/2026 bans setting off fireworks of category F2 and above all year, with no New Year exception, in 20 districts including Praha 1, the historic centre. Fines can reach CZK 100,000 (about €4,100). In other districts the decree sets when and where fireworks are allowed.

The centre was already restricted last year. Prague's municipal police put 180 officers in the centre, and Slovanský ostrov and part of Střelecký ostrov closed from 17:00 on 31 December to 06:00 to protect people and the islands' wildlife. Police logged 269 reports, 50 fewer than a year earlier, and the district reported thinner crowds in the historic centre.

Build the night around music instead: the Czech Philharmonic plays New Year concerts at the Rudolfinum on 31 December and 1 January, and the Municipal House hosts a New Year's Concert on 1 January at 15:00 and 19:30. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute's normals (via the WMO) give December highs of 3°C (37°F) and lows of −1°C (30°F). More on Prague.

The trade-off: no rockets over the Vltava at midnight, and the cold is real.

15. New York — the Times Square ball drop

Times Square is free and open to anyone willing to wait. Viewing areas opened at 15:00 last year, through access points at 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets on Sixth and Eighth Avenues. The ball begins its descent at 23:59; since November 2025 it has been the Constellation Ball, 12.5 feet across, weighing 12,350 pounds and set with 5,280 crystals.

The rules are strict: no backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, chairs, picnic blankets, large coolers, alcohol or drones, and there are no portable toilets. Leave your viewing area for a restaurant and you cannot return. Last year the 42nd Street subway entrances closed from 10:00, and trains skipped 49th Street (N, R, W) and 50th Street (1) from noon until 00:15. The Times Square Alliance had not posted 2026/27 details as of 4 October 2026.

NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Central Park give December highs of 7°C (44°F) and lows of 1°C (34°F). Book New York rooms early if you want to walk back afterwards.

The trade-off: a good spot means about nine hours on your feet in the cold, with no toilet.

16. Amsterdam — the first New Year under the Dutch fireworks ban

Since 1 August 2026 a national ban stops consumers from buying, keeping or setting off fireworks, apart from category F1 items such as sparklers and bang snaps. Only local foundations or associations with an exemption, and licensed professionals, may set off fireworks. 2026/27 is the first New Year under the ban. At the 2025–2026 New Year, 1,239 people were treated for fireworks injuries, half of them bystanders.

I amsterdam had not listed a 2026/27 programme as of 4 October 2026. Last year Museumplein hosted an "electric fireworks" show for up to 60,000 people, with a children's show at 19:00 and the countdown from 23:50, plus a fireworks show at Sloterplas from 00:00 to 00:10.

Last year Amsterdam Centraal closed completely from 20:00 to 01:00, and I amsterdam warned that trains, trams, metros and buses would not run in that window; night buses from Centraal started at 01:30. On 1 January many museums opened and swimmers took the New Year's Dive at Zandvoort. Our calculation from KNMI data for 1991–2020 at Schiphol gives December highs of 7°C (45°F) and lows of 2°C (36°F). More on Amsterdam.

The trade-off: public transport pauses for five hours, and nobody yet knows how a ban-year New Year will feel on the streets.

Practical tips

  • Book tickets first, then beds, then flights. Ticketed events set your dates: London's first sale opened in mid-October last year, Edinburgh's Street Party is on sale now and Vienna's concert lottery closed in February. Ask about minimum-stay rules before paying a hotel deposit, and see when to book cheap flights.
  • Check transport for 31 December and 1 January. Last year Amsterdam Centraal shut from 20:00 to 01:00, Rio's metro sold its special pass only online, Dubai's metro ran for 43 hours straight and TfL services in London ran all night. Plan 25 December separately: London had no service across most of the network on Christmas Day.
  • Know the crowd rules. At most Sydney vantage points and in Times Square you cannot get back in once you leave, and Times Square has no portable toilets.
  • Guard your pockets and keep your distance. The UK Foreign Office warns that criminals target large celebrations in Brazil. Fireworks hurt onlookers too: half of the 1,239 people treated in the Netherlands last New Year were bystanders.
  • Buy travel insurance when you book. The UK government advises buying cover as soon as possible after booking, says an EHIC or GHIC is no substitute, and notes that most policies exclude incidents after excessive drinking.
  • Expect 1 January closures. 1 January 2027 is a bank holiday across the UK, Scotland adds 4 January, and 1 January was a public holiday in Dubai last year. Some culture stays open: many Amsterdam museums, including the Rijksmuseum, opened last 1 January.
  • Pack for standing still. Long waits call for layers, a hat, water and a power bank; use our travel packing checklist and the international travel checklist for documents.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where is the best place to spend New Year's Eve 2026?

It depends on what you want from midnight. For scale, Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana holds the Guinness title for the world's biggest New Year's Eve. For a classic winter celebration, choose Edinburgh's Hogmanay or Vienna's free Silvesterpfad. For dependable warmth, Bangkok and Dubai average only one or two rainy days in December.

Do you need tickets to watch New Year's Eve fireworks?

Sometimes. London's riverside viewing areas and Edinburgh's Street Party are ticket-only, and several of Sydney's best vantage points need tickets or ballots. Times Square, Dubai's public viewing areas and Vienna's Silvesterpfad are free.

When do London New Year's Eve 2026 tickets go on sale?

As of 4 October 2026, the Mayor of London's page said the release date would be announced soon. Last year the first tickets went on sale on 17 October and the final batch on 24 November, at £20–£55, only through Ticketmaster.

Which cities restrict fireworks on New Year's Eve 2026?

The Netherlands bans consumer fireworks nationwide from 2026/27, apart from small F1 items, though licensed professional shows can go ahead. Prague bans category F2 and above all year in 20 districts, including the historic centre, and Vienna bans rockets and bangers from category F2 across the city.

Where is it warm on New Year's Eve?

Bangkok averages December highs of 31°C (88°F), Rio de Janeiro 29°C (84°F), Dubai and Nassau 26°C (79°F), and Sydney and Cape Town 25°C (77°F). In Europe, Gran Canaria at 22°C (72°F) and Madeira at 21°C (70°F) are the mildest picks here.

Does public transport run all night on New Year's Eve?

In some cities. Last year TfL services in London ran all night and Dubai's metro ran for 43 hours, while Bangkok's MRT stopped at 02:00 and Amsterdam Centraal closed from 20:00 to 01:00. Most operators published last year's plans in December, so check again before you travel.
