May is the last great shoulder month of the year. The northern spring is fully switched on — 20–25°C afternoons across southern Europe, Japan and Korea, the Andes drying out, the Indian Ocean at its calmest — but summer pricing has not arrived, and the famous places are busy rather than overwhelmed.
The catch in 2027 is the calendar. Golden Week runs to 5 May, Orthodox Easter lands on 2 May, Ascension (6 May) and Pentecost (16–17 May) give much of Europe two long weekends, Turkey's Kurban Bayramı takes 15–19 May, and Britain and America both have a holiday on 31 May. Travel in the gaps — roughly 10–14 May and 20–26 May — and May is one of the best-value months of the year; travel on the long weekends and you pay summer prices for spring weather. Twelve places where May is the point, with the dates that matter.

1. Japan — The Quiet Weeks After Golden Week
Golden Week, Japan's biggest travel surge, runs from Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May in 2027 (Cabinet Office holiday list). The day it ends, Japan opens into one of its best windows: fresh green maples, 20–25°C days, low humidity. Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri falls on Saturday 15 May — 511 people in Heian-court dress, 36 horses and two ox-drawn carriages, leaving the Imperial Palace at 10:30 (a day later if it rains). Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri, held in full only in odd-numbered years, also lands in mid-May. Our Golden Route itinerary links the two cities.
Cost reality: $110–180/day — well below sakura or autumn-leaf prices. The trade-off: arrive in Golden Week unbooked and you meet full trains, full hotels and peak prices. Humidity builds through late May; the rainy season usually starts in early June.
2. Greece — After Easter, the Islands Open
Orthodox Easter is late in 2027 — 2 May — so Holy Week runs 26 April to 1 May (our April guide covers it), and Easter Monday, 3 May, is when the Greek season properly starts. Island hotels and tavernas that waited for Easter open their doors, ferry timetables fill out through the month, and the islands sit at 22–26°C with the crowds still weeks away. It is the month to walk Santorini's caldera path from Fira to Oia without summer's heat. Our island-hopping itinerary maps the routes.
Cost reality: $85–150/day — Easter weekend and Santorini at the top; Naxos, Crete and the Peloponnese at the bottom. The trade-off: the sea is only 19–20°C, and Santorini already sees heavy cruise traffic. Easter weekend itself books out as Greeks head home — arrive after 3 May for the quiet version.
3. Córdoba & Andalusia — The Month of Patios
The Festival de los Patios, UNESCO-listed since 2012, opens dozens of private, flower-filled courtyards for free; in 2026 it ran 4–17 May with 53 patios (official site). The 2027 dates were not yet announced at the time of writing; the festival reliably fills the first half of May, before the Feria at the month's end (22–30 May in 2026). West of Seville, Pentecost brings El Rocío, one of Spain's largest pilgrimages: in the early hours of Whit Monday, 17 May 2027, the Virgin is carried out of her shrine through the crowd (Rocío dates).
Cost reality: $65–110/day — cheaper than Seville, though patio weekends push central hotels up. The trade-off: the famous patios of the San Basilio quarter draw long weekend queues, so go early. By late May Córdoba passes 30°C, and El Rocío is hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, not a show with seats.
4. Peru — Machu Picchu as the Dry Season Opens
May is when the Andes turn from wet to dry: the rains are over, the valleys still green, and the June–August high season, peaking with Inti Raymi in Cusco on 24 June, has not started. Cusco reaches about 20°C by day under hard blue skies. On Thursday 27 May 2027 it celebrates Corpus Christi, a great syncretic festival: images of the city's saints and virgins parade around the Plaza de Armas, then stay in the cathedral for eight days.
Cost reality: $75–130/day before the fixed extras: the train to Aguas Calientes and the Machu Picchu ticket. The trade-off: Cusco sits at about 3,400m and nights drop close to freezing, so build in two easy days. Inca Trail permits are capped and sell out months ahead for May, and Machu Picchu entry is timed: book both first.
5. Istanbul & Cappadocia — Spring Before the Heat
Istanbul in May is the city at its most generous: 20–23°C, the last Judas trees flowering purple along the Bosphorus, rooftop terraces warm after dark. Cappadocia, a short flight away, has calm, clear mornings for the balloons and wildflowers between the fairy chimneys. Plan around one week: Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) runs from its eve on Saturday 15 May to Wednesday 19 May 2027, and Turkey travels — buses and domestic flights fill, coastal hotels book out, some shops and offices close. Our Istanbul 3-day itinerary covers the city half.
Cost reality: $75–125/day; a sunrise balloon flight is a large extra on top. The trade-off: the Bayram week is the one to avoid unless you want to see it, and balloons are grounded whenever the wind picks up — give Cappadocia two mornings.
6. Seoul & South Korea — Lanterns for Buddha's Birthday
For weeks before Buddha's Birthday — Thursday 13 May in 2027 (holiday dates) — Seoul's temples hang thousands of paper lanterns, and Jogyesa turns its courtyard into a canopy of colour. Yeondeunghoe, the Lotus Lantern Festival, sends a night parade of lanterns through central Seoul on a weekend in the run-up; its 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. May is also Korea's best weather: afternoons of 20–24°C, low humidity, dry spells before the late-June monsoon. Our Seoul 5-day itinerary is built for this season.
Cost reality: $90–150/day — good value for a rich-world capital. The trade-off: spring is also fine-dust season, when haze can make the air unhealthy for days — check the forecast and pack a mask. Children's Day (5 May) and Buddha's Birthday send Koreans travelling, so book KTX trains early.
7. Prague — Prague Spring
Prague's great music festival is named for the season and starts on a fixed date: since 1952 it has opened on 12 May, the anniversary of Bedřich Smetana's death, with his cycle Má vlast (festival history). In 2027 that is a Wednesday, and tickets for the 82nd edition go on sale in early November 2026 (Prague Spring). Around it the city is at its best: blossom on Petřín Hill, beer gardens reopened at Letná and Riegrovy sady, 18–20°C afternoons.
Cost reality: $85–135/day — no longer Central Europe's bargain, but still below Vienna or Munich. The trade-off: Prague is busy in every month but deep winter, and the Ascension and Whitsun long weekends (6–9 and 15–17 May) bring short-break crowds from Germany and Austria. Sleep in Vinohrady or Karlín, and cross the Charles Bridge before 8 am.
8. New York — The City's Best Spring Weeks
May is when New York looks the way it does in the films: 20–23°C afternoons, Central Park and the High Line at their greenest, rooftop bars and outdoor dining back in business. It sits between a raw early spring and the humid summer — the month for long walking days, from the Brooklyn Bridge at dusk to the ferry to Governors Island. Memorial Day, Monday 31 May 2027, is the unofficial start of summer, when the city's beaches open. Our New York 5-day itinerary does the rest.
Cost reality: $240–350/day — the hotel is the problem, and spring is high season in Manhattan. The trade-off: university graduation weekends in mid-May push rates up further, and Memorial Day weekend is busy and expensive. Stay in Long Island City or Brooklyn.
9. Norway's Fjords — Blossom, Meltwater and 17 May
Western Norway in May has two things summer cannot offer: orchards along the Hardangerfjord flowering beneath still-snowy mountains — the blossom usually starts in mid-May and lasts about a month, says the Hardangerfjord tourist board — and waterfalls swollen with snowmelt. Then there is 17 May, Constitution Day, when the country turns out in national dress for children's parades and the royal family waves from the palace balcony in Oslo. In 2027 it is also Whit Monday, so Norway gets a three-day weekend.
Cost reality: $170–260/day — supermarkets, ferries and a shared rental car keep it in check. The trade-off: several mountain roads stay closed until late May or June, hiking above the tree line means snow, and the fjords are cold. Blossom timing moves with the spring, and on 17 May shops close and restaurants book out.
10. Uzbekistan — The Silk Road Before the Heat
Uzbekistan's great cities are made for spring. In May the tilework of Samarkand's Registan and Shah-i-Zinda glows under clear skies at 25–28°C, Bukhara's old town is at its best for evening walks around Lyab-i-Hauz, and the orchards are in full leaf. The Afrosiyob high-speed train links Tashkent with Samarkand in about two hours and runs on to Bukhara, so the classic route needs no internal flights; walled Khiva is the long-distance add-on. May is the last of the spring window before the summer heat sets in.
Cost reality: $50–90/day — boutique guesthouses in restored merchant houses are the mid-range sweet spot, and the trains are cheap. The trade-off: by late May Bukhara and Khiva pass 30°C, so sightsee early and late. Afrosiyob seats sell out — book as soon as sales open.
11. London — Chelsea and the Long Evenings
London in May is the city with the lights on: sunset is close to 9 pm by the month's end, the parks are at their greenest, and pub gardens fill from mid-afternoon. The fixed point is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 18–22 May 2027 — RHS members on Tuesday and Wednesday, the public Thursday to Saturday. Kew's bluebells peak in early May, and two bank holidays bookend the month, on 3 and 31 May. Our London 4-day itinerary covers the city.
Cost reality: $170–260/day, with a Chelsea-week premium on hotels in the south-west of the city. The trade-off: Chelsea tickets are sold in advance and the show is crowded every day. The 31 May bank holiday starts half-term for many English schools, and May weather is changeable: 20°C sunshine one day, 12°C drizzle the next.
12. Seychelles — The Calm Between the Trade Winds
The Seychelles has two calm seasons a year, and May closes the first. Between the north-west monsoon and the south-east trades, April and May bring the flattest seas and clearest water of the year — around 29°C, with visibility up to 30 metres — ideal for snorkelling off Praslin and La Digue and diving off Mahé. On Praslin, the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai shelters the giant coco de mer palm; on La Digue, Anse Source d'Argent needs only low tide and a bicycle. The south-east winds strengthen from May to September, so the earlier in the month, the calmer the water.
Cost reality: $220–330/day — never cheap; self-catering guesthouses and the inter-island ferry keep it mid-range. The trade-off: a long-haul, high-cost trip, and as the trades build, seaweed and rougher water reach south- and east-facing beaches. Base yourself on the sheltered north-west side, at Beau Vallon or Anse Lazio.
Practical Tips for May Travel
- Plan around the long weekends. The holidays above push prices up wherever they fall, and China's Labour Day holiday (usually 1–5 May) adds a domestic travel surge of its own. The gaps — roughly 10–14 May and 20–26 May — are where the shoulder pricing lives.
- May is the Mediterranean's last shoulder month. The sea reaches only about 19–20°C, and prices start climbing in the last week: go late to swim, early for value.
- The monsoon line moves at the end of the month. Thailand, Sri Lanka's south-west coast and India's west coast turn wet around late May, while Bali dries out — see our monsoon guide.
- Book the fixed things first. Inca Trail permits, Chelsea tickets, Golden Week trains and Easter-weekend island rooms sell out long before flights get expensive.
- Compare it with the months either side before you lock in. April, the month before, is cooler and cheaper around the Mediterranean; June is warmer, with summer prices starting.

How to read the numbers: temperatures are typical monthly averages for each destination, not forecasts — individual days vary widely. Daily budgets are mid-range, per-person editorial estimates covering accommodation, food, local transport and activities; they are a planning guide, not surveyed data, and move with season, booking window and exchange rate. Festival and holiday dates are sourced below and were verified for 2027; where an organiser had not yet announced its 2027 dates, the text says so and gives the usual pattern.
