Search for "AI travel agent" in 2026 and you get three unrelated products wearing the same label: chat planners that build an itinerary and then hand you to a booking site, booking platforms whose assistants sell you their own inventory, and general assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude that now carry travel apps inside the conversation. They cost different amounts, work in different countries, and only a few of them can complete a booking without sending you somewhere else.
This guide sorts them by the only question that matters when the word "agent" is on the box: when you say "book it", what happens? Every price, country and capability below comes from the company's own pages, press releases or app-store listing, read in September 2026, and the sources are listed at the end. One disclosure first: MonkeyTravel is our product, so read our own entry with that in mind.
The short version
- Book inside the conversation: Priceline's Penny (flights, cars, hotels in beta), Mindtrip (flights via Sabre and PayPal, stays through partners), Otto (business travel), and Google's AI Mode for hotels in the US.
- Plan, then hand you to a checkout: Layla, Wonderplan, Wanderlog, MonkeyTravel, Kayak's Ask AI, and the Expedia and Booking.com apps inside ChatGPT.
- General assistants with travel plumbing: ChatGPT (Expedia and Booking.com apps, outside the EU), Claude (Expedia, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Viator and lastminute.com connectors), Gemini (live flight and hotel data, no booking in the app).
If you want a plan you can walk, use a planner. If you already know what you want and want it bought in one place, use a platform agent, and check the country list first: almost all in-chat booking is US-first.
What "book it" means in 2026
Three levels, and companies blur them on purpose:
- Search with live prices. The assistant shows real rooms and fares. You still buy on the airline or hotel site.
- Hand-off checkout. The assistant finds it and sends you to the partner's normal checkout with your choice preloaded.
- In-conversation booking. Payment happens without leaving the chat, usually through a partner's payment rail. This is what "agentic" is supposed to mean, and it is rarer than the marketing suggests.
The table uses those three levels.

The agents that book inside the conversation
Priceline's Penny
Penny has been able to book a hotel inside the chat since its June 2023 launch. In June 2026 Priceline called it "fully agentic": a set of "more than 10 specialized agents" that "let travelers book their trip without leaving the conversation", covering flights and rental cars, with a hotel recommendation feature ("Penny's Take") still in beta. Priceline says Penny now "converses in multiple languages" and that "the latest Claude models support core conversational reasoning and planning" behind it. Penny lives in Priceline's iOS app, desktop and mobile web. Priceline has not published which countries can use the booking flow, so check from your own account before relying on it.
Mindtrip
Mindtrip is the planner that went furthest into booking. On 6 May 2026 Sabre announced that Mindtrip travellers "can check out directly within the experience using PayPal" for flights, and in July 2026 Mindtrip Stays let you "book directly through Mindtrip or with the supplier of their choice", with Priceline, Nuitee, Expedia, Booking.com and Agoda named as partners. Its terms are clear that Mindtrip "does not sell any products or services directly": the reservation is made with a third-party provider even when you never leave the app. The planner itself is free with no paid tier, but it sits behind a Google or Apple login, and the iOS app lists English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, German, Dutch and Norwegian.
Otto the Agent
Otto is the clearest case of the word "agent" meaning what it says, but it is built for business travellers. Its own launch post promises it "completes the full transaction inside the experience, without redirects or re-entering personal and payment details", and the current scope is flights for solo travellers, hotels for up to two guests, and, since July 2026, rental cars. It runs on the web, iOS, Android, email, Slack and Microsoft Teams, and also as a ChatGPT app and a Claude connector. Pricing is "free to use during early access", with $10 a month listed for later. If you travel for work and want an assistant that books, this is the one to try; for a holiday it is the wrong tool.
Google's AI Mode
Google is booking hotels inside Search. Since 27 August 2026, "Hotel booking in AI Mode has started rolling out in the U.S. in English", with Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Trip.com and the big hotel groups as partners and payment through Google Pay; Google's help page adds that the partner "processes your payment" and that it is limited to "select properties". Flights are different: AI Mode tracks prices but tells you to "buy your tickets through the airline's website". Restaurant reservations through AI Mode work in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, India, Singapore and a few other countries. Outside those lists, AI Mode plans; it does not book.
The planners that hand you off
Layla
Layla calls itself an AI travel agent, and Expedia Group agreed with the description when it bought the company on 31 July 2026: "an AI-powered travel agent that helps travelers discover, plan, and book trips through conversation." What that means in practice, as of September 2026, is a chat that builds the trip and pulls live prices from partners, then sends you to them to pay. It is free to download; Premium costs $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year on iOS. By March 2026 Layla reported "over 5 million users" and "over 2 million trips". Expedia has not said what the acquisition changes for users, so treat any "Layla now books" claim as unconfirmed until it appears on Layla's own pages.
Wonderplan
Wonderplan is free ("at least for now", in its own FAQ) and generates a day-by-day plan you can reorder and download as a PDF. Its terms state plainly that it does not "act as a travel agency, booking agent, or tour operator"; the booking links are affiliate links to Viator, Kayak and Klook. Full use needs a login. Good for a quick single-city plan; not an agent in any sense.
Wanderlog
Wanderlog is an organiser rather than a generator: you bring the places, it makes the map, the days and the shared trip, and it imports your flight and hotel confirmation emails. It does not book anything. The free tier covers collaboration and unlimited places; Pro is $39.99 a year for route optimisation, offline access and "unlimited AI assistance". MonkeyTravel
Ours. Type a destination and dates and you get a day-by-day itinerary with real places, opening hours and costs in about thirty seconds, with no account: five free plans a day signed out, a free account for more. It plans multi-city trips, lets you edit the plan by chatting with the assistant, and lets your friends vote on the days without signing up. It does not book: the "Find stays" links hand you to a stay search. Across the 558 live trips on the platform at the end of September 2026, 86% of days carry three to five activities, which is the density a day can actually hold.
The booking platforms' own assistants
Kayak's Ask AI is the honest one. It is "completely free to use for all users", works "without creating an account", has been available globally since April 2026, and Kayak's help page says exactly where it stops: "we don't handle the actual booking or payment." You compare, then "View Deal" takes you to the provider.
Booking.com's AI Trip Planner started as a US-only beta in June 2023, reached the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore in October 2024, and books through the normal Booking.com checkout. The features Booking.com labels "agentic" (Smart Messenger and Auto-Reply, October 2025) are messaging tools between guests and properties, not booking agents. Inside ChatGPT, the Booking.com app lets you browse rooms and, since May 2026, rental cars, then sends you to Booking.com to pay.
Expedia put an app inside ChatGPT on 6 October 2025: ask "Expedia find me a hotel room in New York for under $400 in November" and you get rooms, flights and maps with "dynamic prices and availability" in the chat, "available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside of the EU on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans". Booking happens on Expedia. Its older Romie assistant was an alpha in 2024 and Expedia's 2026 announcements no longer mention it; an "Activity Planner" was promised for later in 2026.
The general assistants
ChatGPT has no booking of its own for travel; what it has is the Expedia and Booking.com apps described above, which are unavailable in the EU. It writes a good itinerary and, as we found in ChatGPT vs AI trip planners, it also invents addresses and impossible days, so check every detail.
Claude takes a middle path. On all plans, including the free one, it can connect to Expedia (live pricing and availability), Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Viator and lastminute.com without a separate sign-in, and Anthropic's rule for connectors is that "before it books or purchases something on your behalf, it's designed to check with you first." The paid Claude in Chrome extension can fill booking forms, and its own guidance says "purchases, financial actions, and other one-way doors wait for you." So Claude will get you to the payment step with the facts in hand; it will not spend your money unprompted.
Gemini pulls "real-time flight info" and hotel search into the chat, but its help page lists what it cannot do: book, cancel, check in or set alerts. Booking lives in AI Mode, and in the US. Gemini's Connected Apps added Fever, GetYourGuide, OpenTable (UK) and Ticketmaster in August 2026 for experiences, tables and tickets.
How to choose
- A holiday you have not planned yet: a planner first (Mindtrip, Layla, Wonderplan, MonkeyTravel), then book where the prices are best. The in-chat bookers are weakest at the "what should we do on Tuesday" part.
- You know the flight and hotel and want it done: Penny if you are inside Priceline's inventory, Mindtrip if you want the plan and the booking in one place, AI Mode if you are in the US and it is a hotel.
- Business travel: Otto, and nothing else on this list is built for it.
- You already live in ChatGPT or Claude: turn on the travel apps or connectors and let them fetch live prices, then pay on the partner site. In the EU, ChatGPT's travel apps are not available; Claude's connectors are.
- A group: Wanderlog for a shared list, MonkeyTravel for a plan your friends can vote on without accounts.
Two things every vendor tells you in the small print
Every company here says its assistant can be wrong. Google: "AI Mode doesn't always get it right." Anthropic: Claude "can occasionally produce responses that are incorrect or misleading." Wonderplan: recommendations "may not be accurate, complete, or up to date." Kayak: "Prices may vary and savings cannot be guaranteed." When money moves, read the confirmation from the provider, not the chat.
And availability is the fine print that bites: in-conversation booking is US-first and English-first almost everywhere, EU users are excluded from ChatGPT's travel apps and from Gemini's personal-data features, and Booking.com's planner ships country by country. The tools that work the same everywhere are the planners.
FAQ
Which AI travel agents can actually book a trip for me? As of September 2026: Priceline's Penny (flights and cars, hotels in beta), Mindtrip (flights through Sabre and PayPal, stays direct or through partners), Otto (business travel: flights, hotels for up to two guests, cars) and Google's AI Mode for US hotels. Everything else hands you to a checkout.
Is there a free AI travel agent? Several. Kayak's Ask AI, Mindtrip, Wonderplan and MonkeyTravel are free to use; Layla and Wanderlog have free tiers with paid upgrades; Claude and Gemini offer travel features on their free plans. "Free" never includes the trip itself, and the assistant earns a commission when you book through its partner.
Can ChatGPT book flights? Not by itself. The Expedia and Booking.com apps inside ChatGPT show live prices and then take you to those sites to pay, and they are not available in the EU.
Is Layla an AI travel agent? That is how Layla and Expedia Group describe it. In use, it plans the trip and pulls live prices from partners, then sends you to them to book.
Do I need an account? For most, yes. Mindtrip requires a login before it shows an itinerary, and Wonderplan for full use. Kayak's Ask AI and MonkeyTravel work without one.
Which works best in Europe? For booking inside the chat, none of the US-first agents yet. For planning with live prices, Claude's connectors work on all plans in Europe, and the planners work everywhere.
