Easter 2027 is early: Palm Sunday is 21 March, Good Friday 26 March and Easter Sunday 28 March. For the great Holy Week traditions, go to Seville, Málaga, Granada, Castile, Rome, Florence, Trapani, Malta, Braga, Antigua Guatemala, San Miguel de Allende or Brazil. To escape them, go to the Canaries, Madeira, Marrakech or Japan's first blossom, or wait for Orthodox Easter in Greece on 2 May.

Every date, time and price below was checked on 7 November 2026, on the organiser's, government's or tourism board's own page wherever one exists. Most 2027 programmes come out in February and March, so where a time isn't announced we give 2026's and say so. Press and independent figures are marked. Times are local. In the UK and the EU, clocks go forward an hour in the early hours of Easter Sunday, 28 March (GOV.UK; EU Directive 2000/84/EC).

When is Easter 2027?

Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027 (USCCB), eight days earlier than in 2026. Palm Sunday is 21 March, Holy Thursday 25 March, Good Friday 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March, the dates in the UK and Spanish holiday lists below. Viernes de Dolores, the Friday before Palm Sunday, is 19 March. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 10 February, the day after Carnival Tuesday; our Carnival 2027 guide has the dates city by city.

Orthodox Easter (Pascha) is Sunday 2 May 2027 (Orthodox Church in America), so Greek Holy Week runs 26 April to 1 May.

What long weekends does Easter 2027 make?

Country Days off What to know
Spain, most regions Thu 25–Sun 28 March Holy Thursday is a holiday everywhere except Catalonia and Valencia; Good Friday everywhere
Spain: Balearics, Navarre, Basque Country, La Rioja Thu 25–Mon 29 March These four also keep Easter Monday
Spain: Catalonia, Valencia Fri 26–Mon 29 March Easter Monday instead of Holy Thursday (Arán moves it to 17 June)
Italy Sat 27–Mon 29 March Pasquetta is a holiday; Good Friday is a working day
Portugal Fri 26–Sun 28 March Good Friday and Easter Sunday are mandatory holidays
Brazil Fri 26–Sun 28 March Paixão de Cristo was a national holiday on the 2026 federal list; 2027's isn't out
England, Wales, Northern Ireland Fri 26–Mon 29 March Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays
Scotland Fri 26–Sun 28 March Easter Monday isn't a bank holiday
United States No federal holiday New York City's public schools close on Good Friday
Mexico School break 22 March–3 April The SEP's second recess for basic education

Sources: BOE (Spain's official 2027 list, published 13 October 2026), Normattiva (Italy), Portugal's Labour Code, article 234, GOV.UK, NYC Public Schools, the SEP and Brazil's 2026 federal calendar. Brazil's 2027 list usually appears at the end of December, so its row applies the 2026 list to 2027.

Spain's longest puente. San José, Friday 19 March, is also a holiday in Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarre and Valencia. Three days of leave (22–24 March) give ten days off, 19–28 March, in Galicia, Madrid and Murcia, and eleven in Navarre, to 29 March. Valencia needs four days (22–25 March) for the same eleven.

No April ponti in Italy. 25 April is a Sunday and 1 May a Saturday in 2027. Portugal loses the same two days.

Brazil. Tiradentes falls on Wednesday 21 April, so two days of leave, either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, make a five-day break.

UK and US. Four days of leave (30 March–2 April) give ten days off in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as our 2027 travel calendar shows. US districts set their own spring break: New York City's is 22–30 April, a month after Easter.

Where to go for the great Holy Week processions

1. Seville: La Madrugá

What happens in 2027: processions every day from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. The Consejo de Cofradías has already approved the order of passage for Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, the Madrugá and Good Friday. On the night of Holy Thursday into Good Friday, La Madrugá, six brotherhoods cross the official route: El Silencio, El Gran Poder, La Macarena, El Calvario, the Esperanza de Triana and Los Gitanos, in the same order and at the same times as in 2026 (Consejo). Holy Wednesday has nine brotherhoods on the route, Holy Thursday and Good Friday seven each.

Crowds and cost: hotels in Seville province were 82.3% full across Holy Week 2026 and 87.4% from Thursday to Saturday (Junta de Andalucía). In April 2026, the month of the Feria and the end of Holy Week, Seville had Spain's highest average hotel rate, €204.60 a night (INE). Chairs on the official route cost up to €200 and a rented balcony about €6,000 for the week (Consejo and property administrators' figures, reported by Euronews).

Book: beds now. Chairs and boxes are passes sold through the Consejo, with renewal deadlines each year.

The trade-off: without a seat you watch standing in the crowd, and the Real Alcázar is closed on Good Friday.

2. Málaga: the Legion and Mena

What happens in 2027: on Holy Thursday the Spanish Legion lands at Málaga's port to escort the Cristo de la Buena Muerte, known as Mena. The Legion informally adopted the image as its protector in 1928 and first landed for Holy Thursday in 1930, according to the Spanish Army. The 2027 times aren't out. In 2026 Mena left Santo Domingo at 18:55 and returned at 02:10, and the Esperanza left at 21:45 (reported by El Español).

Crowds and cost: Málaga province had Andalusia's fullest hotels in Holy Week 2026: 85.7% across the week, 93.5% on Good Friday, and 42% of the region's hotel nights (Junta de Andalucía).

The trade-off: it's the busiest Holy Week in Andalusia by hotel occupancy, and Málaga's March averages 66 mm of rain, more than Seville or Granada.

3. Granada: the Gitanos to the Sacromonte

What happens in 2027: on Holy Wednesday night the Gitanos brotherhood carries the Cristo del Consuelo and María Santísima del Sacromonte up to the Sacromonte, where bonfires are lit among the caves. Holy Thursday is the Albaicín's night, and Santa María de la Alhambra processes on Holy Saturday (Junta de Andalucía). Times aren't announced.

Crowds and cost: Granada province hotels were 79.1% full across Holy Week 2026 and 88.8% on Good Friday. The Alhambra charges €22.27 for a general day ticket, opens 08:30–18:00 until 31 March and recommends buying ahead because of demand. Online sales close at 23:59 the day before.

The trade-off: the coldest nights of the three Andalusian picks, with an average March low of 4.2°C, for a procession that climbs a hillside after dark.

4. Valladolid and Zamora: Castile's silent Holy Week

What happens in 2027: in Valladolid, Good Friday is the day. In 2026 the Sermon of the Seven Words was preached in the Plaza Mayor at noon, and at 19:30 the General Procession set out with 33 pasos and all 20 of the city's brotherhoods, including works by Gregorio Fernández and Juan de Juni (2026 programme).

Zamora's 17 brotherhoods and more than 40 pasos process from Viernes de Dolores to Easter Sunday. Holy Wednesday brings the Oath of Silence in the cathedral square and the night procession of the Capas Pardas, and at 5 am on Good Friday the "Cinco de Copas" sets off. In 2015 it became the first Holy Week in Spain declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Junta de Castilla y León). AVE and long-distance trains run from Madrid (Renfe).

Crowds and cost: we found no official occupancy figures. Valladolid sells seats for the General Procession on its brotherhoods' website.

The trade-off: cold. March averages 15.5°C by day and 3.1°C at night in Valladolid, and the big processions are after dark.

5. Rome: the Pope's Holy Week

What happens in 2027: the papal timetable isn't announced; 2026's came out on 7 March. It put Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square at 10:00, the Lord's Supper at St John Lateran at 17:30 on Holy Thursday, the Passion in St Peter's at 17:00 and the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum at 21:15 on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil at 21:00. Easter Sunday Mass in the square was at 10:15, followed by the Urbi et Orbi blessing from the central loggia at 12:00 (Holy See Press Office).

Crowds and cost: tickets for papal celebrations are requested on the Prefecture of the Papal Household's site, and they are free (Holy See Press Office; Irish embassy to the Holy See). We found no official Easter occupancy figure for Rome.

The trade-off: some sights close around the rites. The Vatican Museums are shut on Easter Sunday and Monday 2027, and in 2026 the Colosseum closed at 13:00 on Good Friday.

6. Florence: the Scoppio del Carro

What happens in 2027: on Easter Sunday, 28 March, oxen pull the Brindellone, a tall, colourful cart kept on Via il Prato, to the Duomo, escorted by the historical procession. At 11:00 a dove-shaped rocket runs along a wire from the cathedral's high altar and sets off the cart's fireworks (Visit Tuscany). Watching from Piazza del Duomo is free.

Crowds and cost: no official figures. On Easter Monday 2026 the Uffizi opened specially, 08:15–18:30 (Ministry of Culture).

The trade-off: it clashes with the Pope's Easter Mass, so you choose Rome or Florence for Easter Sunday morning.

7. Trapani: the Misteri

What happens in 2027: 18 sculpted groups and two simulacra from the 17th and 18th centuries, run by the city's guilds, process through the night, for up to 24 hours, from the early afternoon of Good Friday (Italia.it). The 2027 start isn't announced. In 2026 the groups left at 14:00 from the Jesuit Collegio church because their usual church was under restoration, set off again at 01:00 after a pause, and were back by about 08:30 on Saturday (reported by TP24).

Crowds and cost: no official figures. TP24 advised parking at Piazzale Ilio and taking the free shuttle buses, which ran until 02:45.

The trade-off: the most moving moments come in the small hours, so plan to lose a night's sleep.

8. Malta: Good Friday and the running Risen Christ

What happens in 2027: in 2025, Good Friday processions were held in 16 localities, 12 on Malta and 4 on Gozo, most starting between 17:00 and 18:00 (reported by Newsbook). On Easter Sunday the L-Irxoxt processions carry the Risen Christ, and in several towns the bearers run with the statue (reported by Newsbook). The 2027 times aren't out.

Crowds and cost: we found no official figures.

The trade-off: wind can cancel it. In 2026 a strong-wind warning called off every Gozo procession and six on Malta (Newsbook).

9. Braga: the farricocos

What happens in 2027: the organisers list the Ecce Homo procession at 21:30 on Holy Thursday from the Misericórdia church, and the Burial of the Lord at 21:30 on Good Friday from the cathedral. Both ran at those times in 2026, with the farricocos, hooded and barefoot penitents in black, walking in silence (reported by e-konomista). The 2027 programme isn't out.

Getting there: CP's urban trains from Porto São Bento take 56 to 73 minutes (CP timetable).

The trade-off: the wettest European pick here, with 150 mm of rain on almost 12 days in an average March (IPMA).

10. Antigua Guatemala: carpets and a 3 am start

What happens in 2027: Holy Week in Guatemala has been on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2022, for its processions, vigils, funeral marches and carpets (UNESCO). In Antigua in 2026, Jesús Nazareno de La Merced's procession ran 03:00–14:00 on Good Friday, the burial processions left at 15:00 and 16:00, and the Risen Christ came out at 09:00 on Easter Sunday (town programme, reported by Emisoras Unidas).

Crowds and cost: INGUAT, the tourism institute, projected more than 5 million domestic trips across Guatemala in Holy Week 2026, 53% more than in 2025 (reported by Tico Times). The town ran five car parks at Q20 a stay.

The trade-off: La Merced's Good Friday procession starts at 3 am, and you compete with millions of Guatemalan holiday trips for beds and roads. Bring a layer: the table's 16°C night low is Guatemala City's, and stations nearer Antigua record colder nights.

11. San Miguel de Allende: from Viernes de Dolores to Judas

What happens in 2027: Holy Week opens on Viernes de Dolores, 19 March in 2027; the town's official listing gave it 8:00–12:00 in 2026. Palm Sunday processions end at the Parroquia, the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri and San Francisco, and at noon on Easter Sunday Judas is burned in front of the Palacio Municipal (2025, reported by Mexico News Daily).

Crowds and cost: Mexico's school break, 22 March to 3 April 2027 (SEP), covers all of Holy Week.

The trade-off: the detailed 2027 programme comes out late, so you book beds before you know the times.

12. Brazil: Ouro Preto's carpets or the Passion at Nova Jerusalém

What happens in 2027: on the night before Easter Sunday, people in Ouro Preto lay about 2 km (1.2 miles) of coloured sawdust carpets, from the Basílica do Pilar to the Santuário da Conceição, for the procession after the morning Mass. In 2026 they used about 15 tonnes of sawdust (reported by Itatiaia). The town is about 100 km (62 miles) from Belo Horizonte, roughly two hours by car (reported by Jovem Pan).

The Paixão de Cristo de Nova Jerusalém, in Pernambuco, runs 20–27 March 2027. Its official site listed full-price tickets at R$100–140 (half price R$50–70) on 7 November 2026, with gates at 16:00 and the show at 18:00; Good Friday costs R$140. Jovem Pan reported 2026 full prices of R$180–220, so check before you budget. The open-air theatre covers 100,000 m², with nine stages and about three hours on foot, some 180 km (112 miles) from Recife (Jovem Pan).

Crowds and cost: Ouro Preto's hotels fill over the holiday (Jovem Pan).

The trade-off: it's still the rainy season. Belo Horizonte averages 198 mm of rain in March.

Where to escape the processions and the late-March weather

13. The Canary Islands and Madeira: spring sun

Why now: Tenerife Sur averages 23.6°C by day and 15.5°C at night in March, with 12.6 mm of rain on 1.4 days. Funchal, in Madeira, averages 20.6°C and 14.3°C, with 62 mm on about 6 days. If you want one procession, La Laguna in Tenerife has its own Holy Week in a World Heritage old town (Turismo de Tenerife).

The trade-off: Holy Thursday and Good Friday are holidays in the Canaries too, and Good Friday and Easter Sunday in Portugal, so you arrive on a local long weekend.

14. Marrakech: warm and dry

Why now: March averages 23.6°C by day and 10.3°C at night, with 35 mm of rain on about 5 days. Ramadan ends with Eid al-Fitr, expected on 9 or 10 March 2027 (the date depends on the moon), well before Holy Week, as our 2027 calendar notes.

The trade-off: cool nights, and no Easter ritual at all, which may be the point.

15. Japan: the first blossom

Why now: on the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals, Tokyo's cherry trees open on 24 March and reach full bloom on 31 March. Fukuoka opens on 22 March, Kyoto on 26 March and Osaka on 27 March, all reaching full bloom between 31 March and 4 April. Yokohama's GREEN×EXPO opens on 19 March with about 600 cherry trees (GREEN×EXPO 2027).

The trade-off: the dates move with the winter, and Easter week may be early for Kyoto's peak. Our cherry blossom guide explains the forecasts.

16. Greece: a second Easter on 2 May

Why now: Orthodox Easter is 2 May. On Corfu, at 11:00 on Holy Saturday (1 May), people throw clay pots from windows and balconies around the Spianada (Visit Greece). Corfu's average May temperature, day and night together, is 20.3°C (JMA).

The trade-off: it falls outside most Western Easter holidays, so it costs extra days off, except in the UK, where Orthodox Easter Monday is also the early May bank holiday. See where to go in May and our Greek island-hopping itinerary.

Sources: the WMO's 1991–2020 normals at NOAA for Spain, Italy, Morocco, Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil; IPMA for Portugal; JMA for Tokyo and for Malta's mean. Florence isn't in the 1991–2020 set, so its figures are the Aeronautica Militare's 1971–2000 normals. Malta's Met Office normals for 1961–1990 give highs of 16.7°C and lows of 10.1°C (WMO). Arcoverde is about 100 km from Nova Jerusalém in a straight line, by our estimate.

What's closed over Easter?

  • Vatican Museums: closed on Friday 19 March, Easter Sunday 28 March and Easter Monday 29 March 2027. The free last Sunday of the month doesn't apply when it falls on Easter, as it does in March 2027. Otherwise open Monday to Saturday, 8:00–20:00, last entry 18:00 (hours, 2027 calendar).
  • Colosseum: on Good Friday 2026 it opened 08:30–13:00 only, last entry 12:00, because of the evening Via Crucis (Parco archeologico del Colosseo). It stayed open on Easter Monday 2026, with booking required (Ministry of Culture).
  • Real Alcázar, Seville: closed on Good Friday; 09:30–17:00 until 31 March, then 09:30–19:00; €15.50 (Real Alcázar).
  • Seville Cathedral: Monday to Saturday 10:45–18:00, Sunday 14:30–19:00, €13 online. The chapter warns that worship can change the hours without notice (Cathedral).
  • Alhambra: open every day except 25 December and 1 January.

What to book first, and when

No authority sets booking windows, so this is our advice, with the official sale dates we found.

  1. Now: beds in Seville, Málaga, Granada, Rome, Antigua, Ouro Preto and Japan, and your flights. Nova Jerusalém's tickets have been on sale on its official site since 1 October 2026 (reported by Portal de Prefeitura).
  2. By January: beds in Valladolid, Zamora, Florence, Trapani, San Miguel de Allende, the Canaries and Madeira, and the Alhambra as soon as you can choose your date.
  3. By February: beds in Malta, Braga, Marrakech and Greece for 2 May.
  4. February to March: papal tickets once the 2027 notice is out (2026's came on 7 March), Vatican Museums slots on a weekday, and Valladolid's Good Friday seats.
  5. The week before: check the final procession times and the forecast, since wind and rain cancel processions.

Sample trip: four days of Semana Santa in Andalusia

  • Wednesday 24 March, Granada. The Alhambra in the morning, the Gitanos procession up to the Sacromonte at night.
  • Thursday 25 March, Málaga. The Legion lands at the port, and Mena leaves Santo Domingo in the evening (18:55 in 2026).
  • Friday 26 March, Seville. Good Friday's seven brotherhoods. Leave the Alcázar for tomorrow.
  • Saturday 27 March, Seville. The Alcázar and the cathedral by day, then the Holy Saturday processions.

If La Madrugá matters more than the Legion, spend Thursday in Seville and stay up through the night. Lay these days out in the planner, change them by chatting and share them with your group; it doesn't book anything.

Sample trip: an Easter week in Rome and Florence

  • Sunday 21 March, Rome. Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square (10:00 in 2026).
  • Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 March. The Vatican Museums on a weekday, then the Forum and the churches.
  • Thursday 25 March. The Chrism Mass in St Peter's in the morning (9:30 in 2026), or the Lord's Supper at the Lateran (17:30).
  • Friday 26 March. The Colosseum in the morning, the Via Crucis at night (21:15 in 2026).
  • Saturday 27 March. Train to Florence.
  • Sunday 28 March. The Scoppio del Carro at 11:00. Clocks went forward overnight.
  • Monday 29 March. Pasquetta. Check whether the Uffizi repeats its 2026 Easter Monday opening.

To hear the Urbi et Orbi instead, stay in Rome on Sunday and take the train on Monday. Lay this out in the planner, or start from our five-day Italy itinerary.
